     While I predict another train wreck, it's another legitimate question infected by his second and possibly third sentence.

    All he really needed to say was: "if the internet is shut down tomorrow, what would you do as a replacement job?"

Maybe you're too young to remember a time before the internet existed, but I was seeing providers back then, and I can assure you many other guys on this board were too.  It was just as active of a hobby scene, the only difference is we didn't have discussion boards like this for ridiculous questions to be asked/answered.

The ladies ran print ads in the classified section of newspapers, tabloids or magazines- most of which have now been replaced by the internet.  And since it's called the world's oldest profession for a reason, I'm sure the women of centuries past got the word out just fine before there were newspapers too.

In fact, they've unearthed sections of Pompeii that were covered by the volcanic eruption 2,000 years ago and found street markers indicating where houses of prostitution were located.

on my writing I will consider hiring you. Damn, and you lawyers wonder why everyone wants to see you skydive without parachutes.

An old school client once told me "a girl like you would have never have been involved in this business if it weren't for the internet" and I'm inclined to thinking he's right.

I would have always ultimately become promiscuous.
I doubt it would have been as satisfying.

I don't think bourgeois fantasies of sex work (i.e. the hooker fantasy, the stripper fantasy etc.) would have translated into realization if it involved me seeking it out in streets, hotel bars or placing ads in the yellow pages.

In the same vein of the many clients who would never have sought the services of a provider if it required them dialing a phone number of an unknown quantity, entering a brothel or picking up a streetwalker-

I think that the internet made it sterilized, middle class and accessible enough to do things I otherwise would have not.  

For me, it was only via the internet that the business side of being a promiscuous, somewhat insecure girl with "daddy issues" became a reality for me.
With out the internet I would still be having frequent sex with older mostly married men and accepting gifts and travel dates from them.  I would still be in my late thirties having never experienced a truly monogomous relationship.  And I would still probably be as lazy and unorganized floating from job to job when ever I couldn't get a nice gentleman to pay my rent for me.  I'd still be a wanna be writer, and still take days off to sleep, or travel, or hang out at music festivals or art crawls and take in a few new age seminars.
But now, because of the internet, I can turn all that into a "legitimate business" and make money out of it.
Without the internet I would just be a lot less wealthy and have a lot less access to possible affairs.  
Street walker?  Bar Hopper?  Stripper? Ads in City Pages?  No, none of that would be for me.
It would be too much work I think.  
Nothing like typing in a few words, pasting a few photos, and then ...  click...
the phone starts ringing.  

...and being "of a certain age" I can assure you there were a ton of very hot gals in NY before anyone imagined this on-line world.  So I'd say, if a gal wants to provide she'll do it, Internet or not.l

I don't mean to sound like I'm surprised, it's just, it seems, that the 'net kinda brought it out to the mainstream. Making it more accessible, and inturn, easier for someone that didn't think they had the social skills to meet up with a beautiful lady in the real world.  

And in the same respect, the ladies don't have to walk the streets, hang out in bars, or be under the thumb in a brothel. You do your ad, have the sense to screen prospective clients, and pick and choose who you want to see based on your comfort zone and whether or not the guy checks out to your satisfaction.

It's not perfect, by no means. But the ladies are better off with this medium as opposed to meeting some John on the street or in a bar that they have no idea who the fuck they are, IMHO.

I wouldn't be a hobbyist. I wouldn't have the time or the inclination. The internet makes the providers way more accessable and reduces risk and time. God bless the internet.

A 3-line ad for $20-25/month, automatically renewing if you chose, and a pager.  That's all it took to be in business.  No professional glamor photography, no expensive web site, no expensive monthly ads on the malls.  I know this because I dated two providers during that era, one for 6 years and one for four years, and I used to help them write their ads.

The difference the internet has made is it's now easier for everybody to know what they're getting rather than taking a chance because she sounded OK on the phone.  The ability to see photographs and read reviews has dramatically improved the quality of the experience.  Plus, it has made it possible to see many women, whereas before, it was so hard to find someone you liked, you tended to stick with them as a regular.

And for the posters that think the opposite of the internet is street walking, you're crazy.  There have always been call girls and escorts, of all quality levels, even before the internet.  If anything, they were more expensive and exclusive because they were harder to find.  You found them through word of mouth referrals or other means.  But to think that if the internet didn't exist you'd be street walking is absurd.  If you're not street walking now, you wouldn't have been 20 years ago either.

Also, I'm well aware of the fact that many of the women that escort have college degrees and other jobs.  I know two escorts that have their Ph.D.  Both of them made the decision to keep escorting after getting their degrees, rather than start out in some entry level research job paying $45,000.  I've also known a realtor, caterer and a mortgage broker that supplemented their incomes when business was slow.  Frankly, I think it's great they're able to do that and I love seeing ladies that have other careers because it always seems more like a real date to me and less like P4P.

I discovered TER by accident. A client told me he got my name off of here. Had no clue before that. That was 16 months ago.. Here in nyc, there are free newspapers on just about every street corner. They are called the village voice and the nypress. That is where most advertised. Including me. Once I got use to ter and listened to all the wonderful ladies and their advice, I learned how to advertise on the internet. I had placed one ad in 4 years. Wasn't that impressed. Did get 2 long time regulars out of it though. I did have a reg volunteer to put me on craigslist, and the phone started..I was never that interested in computers.

I am grateful for the internet...once you get use to it...its useful

And since you post you insightful, (intentionally?) provocative thoughts in this semi-public venue it is completely fair for those who read this board to reply.  A small fraction even agree with you on occasion.

Personally, in this case, I think Marikod is expending his energy needlessly.  He can spend a lot of time and space trying to educate you about writing clear posts but it would most likely be in vain.  I believe you intentionally write confused ambiguous posts because it allows you to slip in far more backhanded slaps at whole groups of people, and when confronted, claim it is not what you said.

Some may think you are an angry, loud, irritant, but personally I do not think you are ignorant about the English language.  That would be too easy an out for you.
