On many of these issues the so called liberal politicians have the same position as the conservative politicians but many of the liberals on this board don't want the facts to get in the way of their opinions.  As you mentioned John Kerry has come out in favor of a constitutional amendment and Barbara Boxer has stated that she is anti gay marriage.  The persecution of this hobby at least in California has been carried out in a large part by liberal democratic politicians at the city and state level.  Bill Clinton is a huge supporter of NAFTA and actually sent Al Gore to debate Ross Perot about NAFTA on national television before NAFTA was passed by the Senate.  I think that may be the only debate that Gore ever won.
