Several days back, Michelle posted a message in which she enumerated several of her "aliases", which were really synonyms for prostitute, then several contributors, self included, added ones she had left out. It got me to thinking not only about how many names there are for the world's oldest profession, but nicknames for other pastimes as well. On one occasion,several of my guy friends were coming up with other expressions for masturbation, and I became convinced that there are more expressions for whacking off than any other in the English Language. Then after Michelle's post, I decided it might be a close race. Are there any other English words that have anywhere near the number of synonyms as these two? Is it just coincidenc that they both involve male pleasure? I've seen it read & heard it said that Eskimo's have hundreds of names for snow, because it is an important factor in their lives. Sex must be very important to the English speaking male!

Getting back to Michelle's post,here is a little trivia that I didn't have time to reply that day. The term "hooker" is not as derogatory as many may think. It originated in the Civil War. There was a union general by the name of Joseph Hooker.He would bring in girls to service his troops, who came to be known as Hooker's girls. A very noble general in my opinion So don't get hung up on the term hooker.

Thankfully, masturbation and prostitution can and often do involve women's pleasure as well.  

Also, as the thread below about nicknames for the female genitalia has shown, that word is right up there, along with the one for male genitalia.
