You do not actually burn off many calories excercising. That's not the benefit. The benefit is that you raise your metabolic rate. So that even sitting around or sleeping, your body burns more calories every minute.

You also build lean muscle mass. Which burns more calories, even at rest.

It is more effective to emphasize a safe excercise program than it is to emphasize calorie restrictions.

Ironically, when someone begins to feel more energetic and healthier - when they see progress in terms of what they are able to achieve in an excercise program - this gives them motivation to *improve their eating habits*. Eliminate un-needed junk and high fat foods. Eat *healthier*.

At times during my military career, I worked with servicemen and women who had a hard time keeping an appropriate fitness level. REMFs mostly (LOL). Cardiovascular conditioning, weight training, flexibility and endurance are the proper focus. The rest will follow.

Unless you are meticulous in your food choices, a high protein diet is often also high in fat. This is not necessarily a bad thing.  Fat is calorie dense but is otherwise inert. In other words, consumed fat will not make one retain body fat unless caloric intake is substantially greater than calories burned.  The real culprit is sugar. Refined sugars and simple carbs (instead of complex carbs) are the worst.

Solution...exersize. As you said...build some muscle and increase that metabolic rate. Combine that with a healthy diet devoid of simple sugars and watch the changes.

There are plenty of people that have had these surgeries and the complications that come with them AND gained back the weight.

Education in food choices/amounts and exercise is where it's at. You look at the food choices of fat people...I do every time I go to the supermarket. I see some fat person and glance in their cart...all the shit that makes you fat is sitting in that cart.

Unfortunately, we as a culture want instant gratification. If a person has been overweight for 10 years, and then expects to lose it in 6 months and keep it off...well forget it...not going to happen.

The fat set point can be altered but you need to be very diligent and it takes time and discipline. You essentially are manipulating your body chemistry and structures in order to do this.

What pisses me off about very overwieght people is their push to have society fully accept their unhealthy lifestyles. And by this I mean making movie theater seats larger, booths in restaurants larger and even airline seats larger. At the increased for the rest of us to do so. It would be better for all concerned if they just lost the weight or were made to pay more for things as a sort of incentive. Higher health insurance rates, two tickets on airlines if they need two seats and likewise in movie theaters.

Then maybe, just maybe they would see fit to not shovel high calorie, high fat foods in quantities that could feed a small nation, into their mouths and get of their butts and move.

Glandular and endocrine problems aside...those numbers are small compared to those who got fat by eating shit food.

And for those about to lynch me...I did a personal experiment 10 years ago where I purposefully gained weight...50 pounds to be exact. It took me three months to do it on a steady diet of fast food...my choice was Wendy's. And I stopped exercising. Oh I got fat and miserable. Then I added exercise and completely changed my diet and guess what???? I lost all the weight over a three month period.

So amount and choice got me fat...nothing else. Had I kept this up for years, I am certain I would have gotten to gargantuan proportion and my endocrine system would have been all out of wack...only AFTER I had done sufficient damage with poor choices and no exercise.

Ok, let me first stipulate that there are "some" people who have no choice, due to medical reasons, Thyroid problems, etc.

That said, the overwhelming majority of fat people are fat due to personal choices. I am sick and tired of hearing excuses about "why I'm fat" or that we should be more accepting of fat people. I am perfectly accepting of fat people until their fat spills over into my airline seat, or they expect me to subsidize their health issues. Oh yeah, and when fat broads expect me to fuck them. lmao

As I get older it is becoming more and more difficult for me to maintain the waist size I had in my youth. I have accepted the fact that I will probably never fit into a 32 waist ever again in my life, but does that mean I should let myself go and become a 40 waist?
