....these days, and there are pros and cons for both arrangements. Obviously, if you have a spouse/SO, the risks are lower when traveling. I almost always travel for work by myself, which gives me a lot of freedom. When I hobby in my hometown, it has to be lunch hour or late afternoon meetups. At lunch, I worry about the boss calling me; after work, I worry about the wife looking for me! On the road, I've got less of those concerns -- sure, the boss or wife might call me, but the excuses are easier.
There's also the fact that I live in a podunk town, and almost always travel to bigger, more active cities for this hobby. So the selection is much better!
Downsides: of course, if you only hobby when you travel, you have less opportunities for play (unless you're a real road warrior). It also makes it much harder to develop a regular favorite, unless you return to the same city over and over. So in a sense, I'm almost always seeing a girl for the first time. That can be fun and exciting, but there's always the risk that I'll won't click with her, she'll no-show, etc. -- all the concerns that come from seeing someone you don't really know.
