All too often, I read postings that state "eom" and notwithstanding, dozens of readers open those posts which is wholly unnecessary. So be it.

EOM doesn't close the post but perhaps its used incorrectly too often

I often click on them just so that the link changes color so that I know that it is not a new message. That way I can quickly glance and see if there are new posts on threads that I'm interested in.

I don't know why other people click on them, but at least the mystery is solved for one person.

of getting information about the author of the post?  There are many reasons for clicking on EOM posts.  I thought this was fairly obvious.

He's taken over this board with his constant  shilling, and now he wants to  be board teacher?  His advice is inaccurate as often as not and he's driving people off the board.
