I often click on them just so that the link changes color so that I know that it is not a new message. That way I can quickly glance and see if there are new posts on threads that I'm interested in.

I don't know why other people click on them, but at least the mystery is solved for one person. :-)

of getting information about the author of the post?  There are many reasons for clicking on EOM posts.  I thought this was fairly obvious.
