Shocking to see how much effort LE has put into stings this year.
The Richfield Public Safety Department's Special Investigation Unit arrested 10 men for engaging in prostitution in a public place during a sting along the Interstate 494 corridor Tuesday.
According to the department's Facebook page, the SIU was assisted by the Bloomington Police Department
Engaging in P4P anywhere outside a private residence is no longer a Misdemeanor. It is a gross misdemeanor in Mn.
It doesn't matter if you are in a room or not. It also matters where the solicitation occurs. Lets say you met at a bar where the solicitation occurred, then went to a residence, it would be considered a public place based on where the deal was agreed upon
I am in agreement with you oleoneeye. I have seen dozens of reports where arrests were made at hotels resulting from stings & otherwise & they were charged with gross misdemeanors.
Someone needs to take the "public place" definition in MSA 609.321 to the court of appeals. If appealed, the legal definition would be struck down in minutes. The legal definition of "public place" appears in many places in MN statutes, and nowhere else is such a nonsensical definition of public place allowed.
Think about it... If a hotel room really is a public place... Then it would be absolutely illegal for a married couple to have sex in a hotel room. It would be illegal for me to change clothes in a hotel room. It would be a serious felony for me to tell my kids to take a shower while in a hotel room. It would be illegal for me to drink a beer in my hotel room. This doesn't pass even a cursory sniff test.
We actually pay these people to do this to us.

Yeah, I would have thought that they would have spent a lot more time giving out pot to the kids on Niccolet avenue again. Although, then again, school doesn't let out for summer for another week yet. Hey, look on the bright side though, at least they haven't beaten or publicly executed any unarmed citizens recently.
Mike Freeman decided to go on the warpath last year.
From what I can tell reading the news reports, these are all pretty simple stings. Hobbyists respond to a fake ad and are lured to a hotel room where agreement of exchanging cash for sex is recorded. Providers are lured to same hotel by fake Johns and caught the same way.
If this is all that is happening, basic screening or simple precautions would have saved the day. But I am curious whether anyone has seen more sophisticated stings than this.
Also, I read a story in a Plymouth paper that the PD was checking sites like TER to help identify who was operating in their cities, so avoiding specifics in ads and reviews ("western suburbs" instead of "Golden Valley") would probably help, but people mostly seem to do this already.
I can't speak for all hotels, but I can provide some info regarding this. Most hotels, including those expensive upper class hotels, don't care as long as you don't cause problems/draw attention to yourself.
St Paul has targeted specific people on many occasions, and so have a few other cities as evidenced by recent busts.
Not sure they actually qualify as stings so much as just targeted LE activity. One of my ATFs about 4-5 years ago was the target of one of those. They picked up a list and worked that as hard as they could. If you didn't have a hobby phone, you were about to feel the pain.
Not much has changed with how they conduct sting operations, just the technology they use.
To be honest a hobby phone & a hobby name isn't gonna save you either if they really want to get you.

I am having trouble picturing this. What do you mean by picking up a list and working it? They got a list of client contact info from one provider and then tried to catch all the guys on it?
It's more like as in simply answering their phone for as long as they can.
Not so much a hit list I would think they'd do that with an agency rather than an independent.
