Has been very active hobbying then got into a stable relationship for nearly 6 years.  Now looking to venture into hobbying again - many providers are on my radar but difficult to connect due to lack of current references.  Have a number of old reviews.  any advice?

Sounds like your sights are set on the more popular or exclusive providers who naturally are more choosey. There are plenty of “independent” $.5 to $$ providers both on and off the TER radar screen that have the perfunctory web page advertisement with phone number/e-mail that a subsequent higher tier provider can later reference.  

 A lot of recent plebian hobbyists who have cut their teeth exclusively with managed/trafficked, English as a new second language K-Dolls are now finding that their proud litany of experiences are near worthless to a higher tier provider because the validity of the reference received(if at all) from the anonymous, behind the scenes manager/agency is largely unquantifiable.

...you'll eventually find some newbie friendly ladies who are confident with their screening that will be happy to see you. References aren't the only way to verify someone, so all you need to do is find someone who is willing to do some alternate form of verification. There are plenty of those ladies out there, myself included.

I'd definitely advise against meeting anyone who is willing to see you without ANY info though... in your shoes I'd be afraid of someone who says "Sure, come on over!" is saying that to anyone & everyone who calls, and who knows what type of situation you might find yourself in.
