Just to referee here, many of the most expensive and coveted wines in the world are Burgundys. Your Gallo comment is on you, not him. Carlo Rossi also eclipses Gallo for jug wine anyway.

It's a bit funny to hear the Californian gang waxing on about Burgundy (not directed at you Sag) when that term seems to be a more or less generic term in Californian wine circles for any red wine, or so Robert Mondavi says. He also had a great comment on all the poetic descriptions of wine that some (well actually most of the industry I suspect) use.

Burgundy is of course a REGION, just like Chablis, Bordeaux et al. So technically there are no California Burgundies any more than there are any California Champagnes.

on French wines, so I was well into adulthood before I would even try California wines.  There are some good ones, but nothing in the same class of some of the classic French wines.  You have to be careful buying French wine in the US.  Most of the stuff on shelves in the US at retail places is the stuff that Frenchmen won't drink.  If you want the good stuff, go buy it in France or buy it at auction from a reputable collector.  

Luckily we have K&L wines here in SF. No grocery store Bordeaux purchases for me!

Who has even mentioned the color? But yes, Burgundy does have fine whites as it has fine reds (and some swill in both groups) -- the whites are made from Chardonnay grapes and the reds from Pinot Noir.
