Lots of good information above. Here's a few more thoughts...
The key to everything is to remember that everyone has their own preferences--and not just about length of appointment. For example, some providers like to get to know their clients a little bit before actually meeting because it allows them to become a little more comfortable and plan accordingly. Others find back and forth emails and texts to be a distraction and (once properly screened) like the randomness and surprise about who they will be seeing. Some like to have some social time in public before heading behind closed doors (often for similar reasons) and others don't like to be seen with clients in public at all. Some prefer longer appointments and some like to be concise and to the point.
Who prefers what? Often you can figure it out in a provider's pricing structure. For example, we offer a discounted social rate because we do enjoy getting to know clients over a drink. We also clearly state our preferred length of appointment for new clients on our website. Honestly, while we would prefer to have longer appointments, we also recognize that not all clients prefer that so offer shorter ones. Occasionally, if a client is respectful and inquires we may even provide special time or other arrangements if there is a legitimate reason. But again, not all providers do that because they aren't comfortable changing their structure.
When in doubt, there is nothing wrong with asking a provider what they prefer if you are interested in trying to align their preferences and your own. In fact, it can be a good idea because if the provider is comfortable and content with the structure of the appointment you will probably be the recipient of that contentment...
Please just remember not to try to get a discount. That can be offensive to just about everyone and, if you should still wind up meeting, it is going to dampen the mood for the provider and that can result in a less than enthusiastic encounter.
If you have any specific questions where we can help you navigate these types of things, there are resources on this website with proper client etiquette and tips. You are also welcome to contact us. We are happy to help and give some advice and direction (to both clients and providers).
