it can't possibly be worth it, when you compare the time and costs involved with staying in the hobby.  also, one sets oneself up for blackmail, once you have signed up for the various overseas brides sites. I have never done it, but someone I know has and it has been a miserable, expensive, sometimes scary experience.

That's because, no matter what agency you find, or how "reliable" they're reputed to be, the only thing that matters is the motivation of the women using the service. And that's where the problem lies. These women are looking for a way to get out of their country and hopefully find a better life. Many (most) will do whatever it takes, say whatever they need, play whatever role they have to, in order to achieve that goal. As long as the agency gets paid, they don't give a rat's ass about her motivation or story and any claim otherwise is BS. The agency will also charge your friend for facilitating communications with the women and will also try to get him to buy a travel package to visit in person. It's all marketing to convince him that she's "the one" and drain his wallet of serious cash. Assuming he meets a woman, brings her to the US, marries her and gets her a green card. Unless he's rich and handsome (if that's the case, why an agency?), he's got at best a few years before she's eligible for a permanent green card, after which she no longer needs him. If he wasn't smart enough to get a prenup, she'll walk away with a chunk of his money and/or assets. Another potential risk is that, if she's smart and ruthless enough, she'll know she can get a permanent green card without waiting by claiming abuse. For that to happen, she'll need to file police charges against him. That's worse for him because she still walks away but your friend will be left with a permanent criminal record. There are plenty of places in the US with a large number of E. European women (Brooklyn, Greater SF Bay Area, etc.), many of them new immigrants and either having green cards already or with the process in motion. At least if he dates one of them he won't need to worry about whether they're just using him to get to the US. I haven't used one of these agencies but I've seriously dated multiple Russian and Ukrainian women and was engaged to one. Some  of them told me sobering stories about matchmaking agency scenarios. And, as smart and sexy as these women are, unless you've got your shit together and are at the top of your game, you run the risk of being taken to the cleaners. I don't have as much experience with other E. European (Polish, etc.) women, although some of the most incredible nights I've ever spent was with a Hungarian babe in Cyprus. But I know enough to know that your friend needs to ask himself some serious questions before walking down that path.

You obviously can't come up with a constructive critique of the content of my post, which isn't surprising. So you default into your typical intellectually vapid mode of sniping around the edges. Kind of reminds me of how hyenas skulk around the fringes of a pride of lions hoping for a scrap of meat. I think your analysis is right on the mark. Even marrying a U.S. citizen exposes you to serious financial losses, if the woman is ruthless enough. Even with a pre-nup, she can use allegations of spousal abuse to ask the court to set it aside. If you've got money and are older and/or not particularly attractive, there's really only one reason a young, hot chick would be interested in marrying you. It's much safer to keep the relationship on a transactional basis.

Great thoughts Steve! Better still would be to shelve the whole idea of the mail order bride even on the transactional level and stick to hobbying. The benefits of that outweigh the risks.

Former Soviet Union (FSU) women come in two varieties: 1) Women who personally experienced life in the USSR and; 2) Women who were raised and influenced by the women from #1. My past relationships were with the first kind and their primary goal was financial security, full stop. If love/affection was in the mix, great, but not required. It's also uncanny how good their radar is when it comes to assessing a man's financial position. They will check out your shoes, watch, the cut of your suit, etc., and make a mental calculation as to whether you're worth their time. If not, they won't give you the time of day. If yes, they'll deploy every skill and charm to "land the big fish." For those outside the US, getting here and getting a green card is the first order of business and everything else can wait. With green card in hand, the other priorities resurface and the poor schmuck who married her is usually tossed aside. Much of this is probably true of other nationalities, of course, but my personal experience is with FSU women. FWIW, this can help with P2P scenarios because, if an FSU provider is persuaded that you're truly worth her time, hang on tight because you're likely to get the ride of your life. They are romantics at heart, enclosed in a hardened concrete shell of practicality.

35 years ago when communism fell ,agencies that offered tours to Russia for meeting future brides popped up all over the place. I went on 2 myself and lost interest. I met plenty of girls but it was too much,; too fast. A marriage to an American girl is tough enough but at least  you are rooted in the same culture. You may may not know know what you really got with an Eastern woman until you've lived with her while. Then it could be regrettable .  
 If you really want to travel over there, don't go with the desperate attitude of finding a future mate. Just go look around and lay low.
  35 years ago travel was much easier compared to today's restrictions and fear.  
I forgot to mention the process of getting a girl over here on a fiance visa is a hassle  and expensive nightmare. At least it was back then
