why on earth would I want to meet other guys/hobbyists?  I don't want to get to know them on a personal level.  am I missing something here??

...if you aren't interested then no one is holding a gun to your head. Here are some positives of these events as I see them...

1. You get to meet the ladies... Which is the main attraction for me.

2. You can network with other like-minded gentlemen which helps in getting the real story (here's a hint, some of the reviews leave out some details that are only shared privately with some trusted colleagues)

BTW... I get you don't like overweight women, but you really don't need to yell.

I heard of super sport fans setting a goal to visit every major league ballpark in a single season.
Can't help to think it would be a hell of a lot of more fun to attend all of your events in a single year. Certainly would make for a better book !
