You know I remember you from the ASP (alt.sex.p) NNTP usergroup days.

There is almost ZERO geographic beauty here. The nearest beach is 3 hours away, and if you like cold greyish water then you will be in hog heaven. Throw in piss poor waves for surfing and unless the bluefish are migrating the fishing is a joke. The mountains amount to no more than foothills. All the lakes in the area are man made. The club scene is downright silly. The gentlemens clubs are either trashy or snooty.

Hey, some people actually believe that DC is recession proof. HAHA let the fools think that.

I cant believe that my family and I left Maui for this dandelion garden. Well, at least we have some fine local sweethearts here that make us feel good. You girls know who you are and if not for you. I would be living off antidepressants, wellfare and rotgut burbon.

Not surprised that you (and I) are bored on a Friday night. Maybe it is just me, that I just dont fit in here. Enjoy Ocean City everyone.

You make some important points -- the Washington area does not excel in any of the things you mentioned, yet most people I know -- and I have lived here 15 years -- really like it here and wouldn't live anywhere else.  Why is that?  Well, there's more to life than beaches, mountains, and clubbing, as enjoyable as they can be.  Many people would find Hawaii boring for more than a two-week vacation -- there's no right and wrong on these issues, and the most important thing in the US is that most of us have choices.

You have got to be kidding....DC is great....between the free museums, free concerts, concerts in general, the Memorials, etc etc and the fact that the ladies here are some of the finest I've seen, I love the area....yea, I like beaches, mountains, all that stupid shit as much as the next person but I can drive to get to that stuff....

It is what you make of it....I assume you are a pretty boring person overall from what you have typed....

No place is recession proof, but certain economic segments of certain cities always fare better than others.

For DC it's defense. I have been hunting for a new employer and have been turning down multiple offers well into 6 figures plus bennies. Other folks here are hurting. Like anything, it depends.

NNTP is the protocol that was used by Usenet - an ancient discussion board technology that actually predates the internet as we know it. It really was a wonderful chaotic environment that had some interesting features missing from today's boards.

Man now that is a good one. I am sure you are one of those who camp out on the mall to get a grea view of the stage. As for the Museums I am sure that when you see the Hope Diamond (for free) for the 17th time, you take go out and celebrate the milestone. If you liked the movie Groundhog Day then the the Memorials (that are free also) will make you fight rush hour (the best in the country) to see Abraham Lincoln sitting down.

Talk about a boring person. I am sure the Free concerts are ultra fun in January.

You can find positives and negatives anywhere including DC and HI, it just depends on your perspective.

I moved from HI to the DC area in '81 and I love the DC area. I love the change of seasons here as much as I find the climate in HI boring. In the DC area I don't have to endure a near constant stream of racial slurs ("f*ing haole") from the "mokes" or having to regularly pound the local punks into the sand just to prove I deserve to ride the waves as much as anyone else. I also like NOT having to feel the love from Portugese Man of War in the water around the DC area. Don't get me wrong, I do have some very fond memories of HI but at the end of the day it's still what you make of it my friend.

"There is almost ZERO geographic beauty here"? Really? Sorry to hear you have such a poor perception of your current surroundings. A change in attitude and a closer look might help even the worlds most pessimistic critic find plenty of geographic beauty to enjoy around the DC area. I for one get just as much enjoyment spelunking at Luray Caverns or fishing on the Shenandoah River as I ever did hiking through Haleakala crater or catching waves off Baldwin Park. It is what you make of it bra. Peace...

Getting mistreated in Hawaii as an Anglo is part of daily life. Haoles who chose to live there do so at their own risk. No sympathy here.

As for the DC area not having geographic beauty. Well, that may have been an exageration. I will take your changing of the seasons example. Yes, that is a spectacle to enjoy and a beautiful phenomenon. However, it is the beginning of the end. It gets dark at 4:30 after that. I just love November rush hour at 5 PM when 495 is not moving and it is pitch black outside like as if it was midnight. As for spilunking I have never tried but I am sure it would be fun. As stated in this thread DC may not be as bad as Lincoln Nebraska but it pails in comparison with most other cities.

Yes, the Bay is beautiful and overlooked by most Washingtonians. The fishing is mediocre (except for Striper season or when the Blues are runnig) and the jellyfish (no Man-O-Wars) make it less than ideal for swimming. Fly fishing for trout on the S-river must be fun but that is something that every other state in the US and Canada offers also. I never said that DC was the worst but it is below average.

Let me ask you when you lived in Hawaii. Could you go surfing or spear fishing when you got off work at 5 PM in December? I am sure you could and did. What can you do here after you get off work at 5 PM in December? Aside from sit in rush hoor or do Happy hour.

I remember the day (I think it was on alt.music.rem) that I first saw a post by a person with a prodigy.net account.  The only other accounts you ever saw were .edu and .gov, and a few .coms from tech corporations.

The next post in the thread just said "uh oh."

Things got a lot less interesting after that.

"What can you do here...?" As stated in this thread you can go to a museum, visit one of the many memorials, go see a fine performance at the Kennedy Center, go play in the snow or do whatever floats your boat. Just because you don't appreciate these things doesn't mean others have to feel the same or that others are boring for appreciating what you don't. The point is that it's what you make of it.

My ideal scenario? I can forget about the feeble minded prejudicial twits of the world who feel it's an acceptable part of daily life to mistreat others based solely on their ethnicity. And even more then surfing or spear fishing I'd rather be making some calls, finding the nearest exit ramp, curling up with a nice lady and enjoying every second of it like it was my last.
