The opinions expressed in this post are my own personal recommendations, and while I consider myself a very highly educated computer user, I do acknowledge there may be better / more secure / greater privacy protection ways of accessing the internet. It's obvious with the new law that many US users have to find ways to access material "banned' within the US... wow can't believe I just typed that.
With that out of the way,
Anyone involved in this area of recreation needs to change their Internet habits- IMMEDIATELY- if you want to stay anonymous in the USA. For countries that allow sex workers, do your thing. This is about anonymizing your activity and as such it will be highly inconvenient at first, because it requires a change in your internet habits. Computer security teams acknowledge that defense in depth is the best thing to do to deter attackers, in this case you are trying to anonymize yourself, so my points below are set to follow this strategy.
First thing: stop using your smartphone for anything related to this area of recreation. Your phone beacons constantly to the cell phone provider towers and if you are on wifi, not only are you beaconing where you are, you are advertising your IP address. Get an old school phone with no internet access to answer/make calls- it isn't called a burn phone in spy movies for nothing. Smartphones auto-track you through everything- fitness apps, pandora, gmail, - and while they are convenient they are not the best choice in this industry. I know I shouldn't have to, but just in case- use cash when buying burn phones, and the cards with the minutes. Don't use credit cards, right? Right? RIGHT?
When trying to post info / find people to hook up with, read second point.
Second: To continue anonymizing yourself, use the TOR browser from a laptop (or worst case from a supported device android, iOS, but be careful mobile devices auto track you) It auto defaults to using HTTPS for web browsing, but if you are unsure, type "h t t p s : forward slash forward slash sample website address dot com " . That is how I am getting here today, without using a VPN (talk about that below). You use the TOR browser for very specific actions that require anonymity- for example, if you set up an email account through TOR, you only USE TOR to access that email account. If you access TER through TOR, you only USE TOR to access TER- even if you are using a VPN. You don't want to "out yourself" by doing non-secure browsing for activity you want to anonymize. Read, read, read, the internet on safe browsing!! Very important! For example, google and gmail still track you if your using TOR!
Third: You can use a VPN to further disguise what you are doing. There are a couple of posts here that already discuss this and the greatest advice I can give is, find a VPN provider that does not keep audit trails, and best case scenario, inside of a country that does not have agreement with US authorities to provide data. So stay away from NATO countries. Be careful of VPN's in Russia (They may be trying to reverse hack you). Even if you are on a VPN, use TOR for your anonymizing activity, and then use whatever over browser for buying things from Amazon. But you need to ensure your anonymizing activity and your trackable activity are kept in separate browsers, and separate machines if you can. I can't repeat this point enough! Talking about machines..
Fourth: If you own an laptop that allows you to encrypt the disk system, DO THAT SHIT. I know Apple laptops have the ability to do this, Google followed suit as well. What does this do? Encrypts the entire disk. Using a standard user password is not enough, you want to encrypt the disk so that the files are impossible to access without the login password. Not sure about Windows.. continuing on with machines down below..
Fifth: If you want to get really freaky, use an encrypted OS that runs off a bootable USB drive. The beauty of this: someone shows up you don't know, ditch the USB vs a phone / laptop/ tablet. Again, use TOR browser and search for encrypted bootable OS.
Sixth: Stop using free email unless its encrypted like proton mail Don't know what it is? Read up on it. This you can use from your smartphone because it's encrypted from your phone to the proton mail server.
Seventh: Do not become a creature of habit. Vary where you access the internet from, and when you do your TER thing. Always follow steps to anonymize yourself- think my advice is a bunch of hooey? Hey woman, and man, do your own research, become educated. Be careful of using libraries to access internet, they may restrict access to TOR, or have logging enabled to track people using VPN. Best place is coffee houses or other areas that have free wifi, like the mall- they don't have the resources or government mandates to log the insane amount of internet traffic generated daily from those locations. Disguise your internet traffic with other users and you end up anonymizing yourself in a sea of noise.
To summarize in reverse order: bootable encrypted USB with an Linux OS, use VPN, launch TOR browsers for your anonymizing activity ensuring that you use "https://" to every site you go to, use encrypted email to communicate, and if you have to make a phone call, get an old school phone to do it with. Use public wifi where possible, if at hotel, do what I just told you to do.
Last piece of advice: " I never walk into a place I don't know how to walk out of."
Well.. this is the last one: "Don't let yourself get attached to anything you are not willing to walk out on in 30 seconds flat if you feel the heat around the corner."
Old school cell phones can still be track by triangulation of the cell phone towers as was used by LE in the 90's....it's just not as accurate as GPS which can pinpoint locations even inside certain buildings.
Certain things should be lower-key anyways. Free country...i can be anywhere and you better have video and/or photo of something unsavory going on. Conspiracy is hard to prove as long as everyone remains silent and communications are low-key.
steganography over cryptography. NSA twitter account has sent out several benign looking tweets that had much deeper meaning to other people.
