You were correct in rubbing her face in the poop, then whacking her with the newspaper, but you didn't correct her behavior.  After striking her with the newspaper, you should have made her enema in front of you, had her sit on the toilet, and poop.  Proper training isn't about punishment for improper behavior, it is about correcting improper behaviors and rewarding proper behaviors.  Punishment is only part of that process, not the entire process.
