Let's say you have a date with someone you've wanted to see for a long time or maybe ATF. I wonder if it's better to abstain for 48-72 hours to have plenty in the tank or masturbate earlier in the day in hope of lasting longer.
Any thoughts ?

I recommend that you don't masturbate. The only way that you can last longer is too be having sex on a regular basis or masturbating on a regular basis. You have to pratice slowing down so you can prolong the experience.

Now that depends on your particular physiology. But sometimes that "lasting longer" masturbatory tactic can backfire, and then you won't ejaculate at all. Of course if that's not important to you, then by all means, pleasure yourself beforehand.

How about something in the middle? Masturbate 24 hours in advance? Again, it depends on how your body reacts. But remember, providers can lose patience with someone who just goes and goes and goes. The big splooge [imagine writing such things, only on this board, LOL] is what many providers desire as a reward for their hard work. Frustration can ensue; make sure that masturbating beforehand will only cause a delay, not an absence of the big, squirty O.

if I hold off for about a week, (not exactly easy, but worth it in the end) then shoot it off, it's pretty good, then hit it again 12 to 24 hrs. later, it's fantastic. It took quite a while to arrive at this conclusion, but it's way worth it.   Remember, this idea works well for my body and my mind, it might not be as effective for you.      P.S. I'm 50, and I've never had seconds, you're not alone.

I had a problem of coming to soon when I was in my twenties, so I started to masturbate about two hours before a date and things went fine.

Later on I found I no longer had to do that.

Now in my fifties, I need to give it a rest at least a few days ahead of time.

Actually, that is a personal question and varies from one penis to another - my preference is to abstain for a few days prior.  
What you should really do is keep yourself from over analyzing this and end up with zip stiffy shooting blanks.

Experimenting is the best way of knowing for sure what will work.

I am 51 and (I think) singularly fortunate in that I usually can manage seconds if I abstain for up to a week in advance, or better yet torment myself by repeatedly bringing myself to the brink throughout the week, never releasing.  It can also help to go to a club for a lapper or two or three just before the session.  Of course, this approach leads to a pop early in the session, but the earlier the first one is the more likely that the contracted time will accommodate a refractory period and a second.  Sometimes with this approach I not only manage two but one of those may itself be a two-parter, with a partial release before the full one and no refractory period intervening.  One time I even had a glorious three-parter with my NQNS ATF, followed by a refractory period and regular second cup, all in my usual and preferred 90 minutes.  I do not know why this works for me, but I am duly thankful.

I vote for DURING the date

If I'm actually going out with a girl and they're not a provider, I clean the pipes ahead of time so as to last longer sure.  Otherwise, I tend to let myself build up for a day or more before seeing a provider because time is money and I already find it difficult as hell to finish with a cover without having also already finished by myself ahead of time.

I like to hear that too but the software that runs my mind has a bug in it, so the other thing I hear when I listen to that is, "I'm going to get tired of this soon so please hurry up and finish."  And that pressure of having to finish right away creates a powerful force in keeping it from happening.  I don't know why, since, it IS an insentive to give it to her.  But it's the worry that if I can't do it in time, she'll make everything stop that makes it hard to relax and enjoy myself.

It's kind of funny because I also have the same opposite-like reaction to "please don't stop!"  Haha!  It's like now the pressure is on NOT to finish too soon!  But I, for whatever reason (probably age) find it easier to hold that back than it is to make myself finish when I can't.

I've tried this using every conceivable sequence/
interval, and it turns out that the critical variables are always 1) the rapport I have with the lady in question at the time; and 2) how turned on she seems to be.  In other words, it's just like being married.  When times are tough or she's acting tired or bored, I just want to get it over with.  If times are good and she's acting hot, then I get harder faster, stay harder longer, and feel like a new oil well coming in.  I'm well over 50, but there've been two times when, well, when there were two times.  Once the lady told me after the first time that she was having more fun than I was--instant second erection.  The other time the lady asked me if I'd ever given someone the pearl necklace--instant second erection.  I once heard a famous, witty elderly guy say that he was glad that his penis was starting to flag--he said it was like finally being able to get off a runaway horse.  I know what he means, and I'll probably feel the same way some day, but that day isn't here yet.
