I have a question. This might be lon so please bear with me. It is not provider realted, but I came here before and got such good advice I wanted to see what you had to say.
I started taking celexa in december an SSRI and I think it might be causing some dysfunction. Before I the celexa I didn't have trouble getting it up or maintianing even though it did take me a long time to orgasm.
Now I started dating a girl when we first started I had trouble getting it up because of the celexa, though in the morning I woke up with one and had no problem maintaining it. I still couldn't come though.
After my doc put me on wellbutrin along with the celexa and that mostly worked for any erection problem. Still the anorgasmia though. Something strange has been happening though.
Last week I slept with two girls in the same day one in the morning and one at night. In the morning I got it up and mas able to masturbate to finish. In the evening I got it up all through foreplay and wen I put the condom on it went away and i couldn't really get it back up that night. In the morning though I had a rager and we went to town. Again though no orgasm. I stayed up we tried oral masturbation but nothing worked.
Sorry for being so long but I really don't know whats going on. Is it nerves, celexa what. I am 32 and I only lost my virginity last year to a provider so I don't really have much experience with this.
Thanks for any help.
Dear phenemol,
No need to apologize at all. Unfortunately there is no reliable way to predict how Celexa (citalopram) is going to interact with your sexual impulses from encounter to encounter. SSRI's are well known for causing anorgasmia, erectile dysfunction and loss of libido.
Your best bet is to get as relaxed as you possibly can to minimize the unpredictable side effects of the medication. This means using a female condom if possible, getting together with someone who really floats your boat and is able to help keep you in an aroused state.
The other problem is that SSRI's take weeks to become effective, so you can't titrate the dose at will just because you have a date on a specific day. You could have a discussion with your psychiatrist (I hope it's not a GP prescribing - sorry, they're not mental health professionals) and see if s/he is OK with prescribing you something else, e.g. Lexapro, which is the single isomer active substance of citalopram. Who knows, maybe that will affect you differently?
Only a collaboration between you and the physician will help,

Hi LG
Thanks for the advice. It is very frustrating. I have been trying to collaborate with my psychiatrist, that is why he put me on wellbutrin apparently that can curb the sexual side effects of the celexa. If it didn't work he suggested changing meds or hypnotherapy(!) for my anxiety. I don't know much about hypnotherapy but the idea kind of freaks me out.
So you do think it is the medicine? There isn't anything physically wrong with me?
Yes, phenemol,
I really think it's the medicine. On the other hand, don't be afraid of hypnotherapy - it's GREAT! Some people are easier hypnotizable than others (yours truly here) but most can achieve a reasonable state of profound relaxation. Don't worry, it's not like some devilesque conspiracy - certified hypnotherapists are very disarming and skilled at what they do.
As to there being something "physically wrong" - can't say. I'm not a physician and I certainly haven't examined you. Best confer with the psychiatrist on that one.
Hope things improve for you,

....for a boner! or stay hard w/condom.
If that works....better than vitamin V!
Natural!
While Wellbutrin can help make you happy, it can also be used for premature ejaculation. Of course this can make you unhappy! Kind of a damned if you do, damned if you don't. If you didn't have premature ejaculation, you will find it difficult to come to orgasm. The condom doesn't help. May want to consider a different med although Paxil does the same thing-ask me how I know. I have found that the Lifestyles SKYN condom can make it a little easier to orgasm
For 4 frikkin' years. Absolutely killed my ability to have MSOG's in a reasonable amount of time. I was thinking, "Is this what 40 is all about?!?!?!"
Fuck that.
I quit the crap simply because it screwed up my life in many ways.
I felt completely self embarrassed my first time with my ATF because I felt like a haggard phantom of my old self.
I am now SSRI free and I feel like I'm 20 again. Within 2 weeks of getting off the junk I'm back to getting major league wood.
I can do twice in an hour and during extended play, 3-6 hours, I usually can go 4 times.
Probably more if I decided to push it.
I'm a very happy 39 year old in this regard.
Why are you on Celexa?
anxiety which leads to ocd
I know it's used for OCD.....
How does your anxiety manifest?
Obsessional negative thoughts that I repeat endlessly which lead to panic attacks
Ever try meditation?
Yes, it works.
My Psych said I could try that or hypnotherapy as an alternative. I have tried meditation but I feel like it works for like 20-30 mins then my anxiety would come back. Have you had better results? Is there a particular method you would recommend?
Honestly the celexa has been really helpful in my life. If it wasn't for this pretty major problem I would happily stay on it. I do want to resolve it though, since I posted this my psych told me to reduce my dosage to 10mg and see what happens.
thanks for your help
I find that it it critical to pay attention to your breathing. I found that when I stressed out I'd get into a screwy breathing pattern leading into hyper-ventilation followed by anxiety/ panic attack.
Any method that where you just relax, let your thoughts go and follow your breath. I don't try to establish a cadence, just let it be.
I count the exhalations up to 10. Then back to 1. If you forget where you are go back to 1. the counting draws your focus away from other thoughts. Subtle and quick. Best of all, no side effects. I had panic attacks that would hospitalize me.
