I just found out I have Herpes Type 1.  Does this mean I can never kiss or request a bbbj again?

Dear Unlucky1,

I am not a physician, so a link to a great article is enclosed. As to HSV-1 (your type), it is estimated that many of the approximately 100 million Americans who are infected, acquired the virus when they were children. By the time they're adults, only some 5% of people are bothered enough to consider oral HSV-1 a medical problem.

About 50% of Americans have HSV-1 antibodies in their blood. By the time they are over age 50, some 80-90% of Americans have HSV-1 antibodies.

On the other hand, you're not saying if you've got genital HSV-1 or 2. It seems a frequent misconception that HSV-1 is simply "the cold sore" oral kind of herpes; however, HSV-1 is usually spread through contact with infected lips, while HSV-2 usually spread through contact with infected genitals. As to kissing or requesting bbbj's, please follow the link provided.

Short answer to your question - yes you can,

As LG said, HSV1 is so common I'm not sure what you're "hit" about?  Are you referring to lesions on the lip, face, or inside the mouth?  If so, press on.  I probably wouldn't kiss ANYBODY with active lesions - or DATY for that matter.  But if the lesions are in the LandDownUnda well then...something else may be going on.

If it's the former you really have nothing to worry about.  Most if not all of us have had the chickenpox - which is primary HSV1.  You can have a recurrent episode at any time - brought on by stress excessive sunlight etc.

So, a little more info needed but if you've been told you have HSV1 - don't worry - practically everybody else does too.  And this information is coming from a specialty health care provider...
