" All men pay for sex in one form of another."

Tell me why or why not.

I much prefer the p4p lifestyle, more choices and freedom to screw when you want, and how you want.

The operative concept is "love as a response to values."

Sex, not in all cases certainly, but in many nevertheless, is a consequence of emotions.

Emotions come from many places. Some, I think it can be said, are innate. Others, however, serve as a sort of instant summary of ideas we hold in our mind.

Take the same objective event, and people with different values will react to it in different ways emotionally.

If, for example, I am giving a presentation on a certain aspect of gardening; some people will find what I am putting forth inspiring. Others will find it boring. Yet others will see it as evidence of my hopelessly non-cosmopolitan and hence unworthy mindset.

The objective event has not changed -- but the emotional reaction in its observers has changed in accordance with the observers' respective values.

A person can experience "love as a response to values" when noting the existence of his/her highest values in the person of another.

What these values happen to be will, of course, vary. Some people hold values I would consider to be quite twisted, which will cause them to love an abuser, for example.

When "love as a response to values" occurs; it is more of a spiritual thing. At that level, it can result in admiration, friendship, etc. But when combined with physical love -- that inscrutable chemistry of attraction -- it can become part and parcel of romantic love.

In romantic love of this sort, the other person's very existence serves as confirmation of the goodness of life. In many ways, they add value and pleasure to our lives -- and make it more worthwhile ... more worth living.

In this sort of romantic love, something done for the other is not a sacrifice; because the other's wellbeing is seen to enhance our own.

In those cases where a combination of physical love and "love as a response to values" exists for both parties ... the other's mere existence is seen as sufficient justification for sex.

I should add that there is a tendency for partnerships of this type to be fairly autonomous, not particularly prone to jealousy, and not especially possessive. The participants likewise tend to be not especially superficial or materialistic.

I do not believe they are especially common; but because they DO exist ... that is sufficient justification for me to disagree with the statement that "ALL men PAY for sex in one form or another."

So that's the answer. For further discussion, though -- read on.

Now, on the other hand, I think that MOST men pay for sex in one form or another.

This is a natural consequence of the differential in the way men and women (in general, not in all cases) view the world.

In general, men have lower criteria for what constitutes a sex-worthy woman than women have of a sex-worthy man.

Because of this differential in criteria; and because when taken as a whole the quality of men and women is just as high; the female drive for higher quality partners will, in most cases, leave women unsatisfied with the men available as mates ... so very often they will feel that they have "settled."

Now, this is a FEELING, not reality. In MOST cases, when a woman ditches her husband in order to be available for a "better" man; her subsequent mates are of the same or even lower quality than the one of which she divested herself. Nevertheless, her feeling of being worthy of better than she is getting puts a negative balance in her mind.

In other words, most people (men and women alike) do not question certain of their feelings or correct them to be in conjunction with reality. So even though the quality of available men is no lower than the quality of available women; a large percentage of women will go with this feeling (called the hypergamous impulse) and will be dissatisfied with a man of the same quality as themselves because they will see their own quality as being higher than it actually is.

This feeling is augmented by girlfriends who will continually re-affirm its validity by telling a woman that "You are worth so much more than Joe," etc. Meanwhile, our dominant media culture -- along with giving men very unrealistic expectations of women -- also plays into enhancing this feeling which has its basis in hypergamy; thus creating the false impression of much better men always being ready and available.

So, in essence, a great many women feel CHEATED in their relationships. In their equation, "love as a response to values" comes up short; therefore they see the man as OWING them something more than he provides simply through his existence and commitment.

Naturally, they set about getting that payment in various ways -- including demands for various material goods and services. In this way, a great many men end up paying (quite literally) for sex.

But there is a converse male phenomenon as well.

We have a society that is obsessed with consumerism and materialism; and in which wealth -- in and of itself, no matter its source -- is seen as proof of virtue.

Many women come to believe that wealth is a man's single most important attribute; and many men will accumulate wealth as a response -- realizing that women who buy into the materialistic mindset can essentially be bought with nothing more than money.

Some men play this. And I will admit that there was a small subset of my life where I played it as well. I discovered that ostentatious displays of wealth would have a certain subset of women draped all over me and "hot, wet and waiting." So, naturally, that's what I used to bait my hook.

It didn't take long for me to be disgusted with myself and with what I was catching; however.

But many men will NOT be disgusted with the results. And they essentially pay for sex through their choice of women. After all, what you catch for fish depends on what you use for bait -- and such bait draws in very high (financial) maintenance women.

Sometimes, men of this sort will use that approach simply because they feel that their material success entitles them to whatever they want in terms of women. (Of course, some women cannot be bought; but the guys don't believe this.)

Other times, material bait may be used when the man feels his character is otherwise sub-par and not otherwise worthy of "love as a response to values."

Yet other times, it's just the easy approach. Although I dated a lot, I hated the whole deal where I had to somehow impress an extremely critical audience. An ostentatious display of wealth can, in many cases, at least get you over the first hurdle.

As David Lee Roth noted; money can't buy happiness but it can buy you a boat big enough to let you sail right up next to it.

But, either way, this tendency can create a circumstance where men are essentially paying for sex.

Executive Summary
------------------
There is a subset of matings in which neither party is paid for sex.

Sometimes, men do not need to pay because they manifest values that result in "love as a response to values" in the woman.

And, frankly, some women cannot be bought at any material price. They will hold out for a man worthy of "love as a response to values."

However, female hypergamous impulses, male drive to wealth acquisition and a common human tendency for both take the path of least resistance combined with a hyper-materialistic culture creates a situation where a great many men -- I would say most -- are paying for sex in some way.

tie your self to the bottom of a helicopter, and exhale over the Gulf oil spill.  The evaporation rate would be increased 1000 fold! On top of that all, after spewing that entire novel(NO, I didn't read it all), You basically make the point that YES all men are paying for sex, while the premise of your argument was to disagree with that very statement.
You really need to shorten these up, and stop tying to dazzle everyone with your bullshit theories, and your love of creating and endless post that rambles on, only to come to a different conlusion that what you started!
In short, quit reading and researching everythng to death, and just write from your experience on the hobby!  That should keep your answers to one line or less!  Gawd you are a bore!

....hire him ASAP!!!!! Hell, he'd blow hurricanes away w/all his bloviating!

for the good of the people, not as a sedative for this board!

I disagree with him on a great many matters (nearly everything of substance, actually); nevertheless his intellect and scholarship are both admirable.

Unluckily for him, I'm afraid I only dig women; so if he needs a BJ, he'll have to seek it elsewhere.

We don't want no stinkin' theories.  We want pithy thinks like me hero Mangina_Observation_Dept posts.  They be kool.

Wow...that was a very well-thought out and much appreciated answer! :) Could be a dissertation of sorts. I appreciate that. I guess I was very curious as to see what all the men would say. But I didn't expect such detailed answers. This is awesome.

Cash, gifts, trips, lifestyle, even attention.  Sex is a valuable experience that men want from women and in order to have that experience he finds some way to make it a reality.  So giving something in exchange to the object of his sexual desire is expected by her.  It's the way things work.

My divorce was the best money I ever spent.

I wonder what would have happened if you had presented your spouse with a bill for all of the escorts you saw during your marriage?

Seems like a fair trade to me. If she won't provide it herself, she should be the one footing the bill when you have to go find it elsewhere.

And if you really want to be ballsy, have your lawyer argue that your ex must now support you in the sexual manner to which you have become accustomed by providing you with a specified monthly allowance to hire escorts with.

Tit for tat, right? :D

Haha so in a divorce case you're 'paying' your wife to 'leave'

"pay for sex," in terms of money or grief:)

I would say that that has been my experience in both regards in varying degrees. But, hey, if sex is all that important to me, and it is, why would I be resentful when having to pay for it in money. It's paying for it in grief that I have little tolerance for.

I would agree with most of johngaltnh's analysis and thus, disagree with the OP statement --

Once we fall in love, the SO and I freely exchange love, sex, commitment -- all those things that make a relationship worth the downsides. Involve children and the stakes ramp up considerably. It's when things fall apart that the "pay for sex" part comes in and I characterize it as more akin to the P4P statement that men don't pay her for sex, they pay for her to go away.

The $40,000 for the divorce and the $1500 a month I paid in early-90's money was the price for the now-ex wife to go away. I wasn't paying for sex, I was paying to get the crazy lady to leave me alone.

It was worth it because if I continued to battle the crazy lady and play her game, I would have become crazy myself; thus, I was also paying to preserve what little bit of my sanity was left! ;)

As Johngault points out, it can get pretty complicated and there are times that sex is given as an expression of pure love so the term "pay" is a bit base, but still there is great effort to practice love and therefore sex associated with love still has a basis of currency, but a very different one that goes into the envelope.

Executive summary:

Yes, but...(See Johngault's post.)

Yes, all men pay for sex as do all women. I am not always  talking about money so to speak. Time is most common form of payment. It takes time to make one presentable so one is attractive enough to attract a partner for sex. It takes time to get to know each other in order. The is always risk involved in sex that is a cost. There is an emotional cost as well. Note that cost can be it own reward if it grows into real love. Often there is a cost in grief if one party miss interprets the intentions of there the other or it just don't work out. Money is often needed as well ether to pay for the sex as in the hobby or pay for the date or lifestyle. Nothing worth anything is free most notably sex or for that matter love.

...that I had sex with a woman on the basis that she just wanted to have sex.  Sure it has happened, but its not that common in my experience.  Usually there has always been some sort of subtle requirement for a certain amount of wining and dining before the panties came off.  This can be called 'romance' or 'paying for it' depending on your point of view.

Two things come to mind:

'The difference between sex you pay for and free sex?'
'The sex you pay for is a lot cheaper!'

And as Charlie Scheen said:

'I don't pay them to have sex with me, I pay them to GO AWAY when it is over!'

If true and I don't believe it is; than all women who have sex are Prostitutes in one form or another.
The underlying fallacy in your statement is that women do not want or enjoy sex.

If you go to a provider, you pay for it. If you are married pay your bills and buy your wife nice things, you pay for it. If you have a gf and you buy her nice things, you pay for it. Its the oldest profession in the world and ALL women are prostitutes in one way or another. And ALL men are Johns in one way or another.

All men pay for sex in one form of another."

This isn't 1950 when most women were dependent on men.Looking outside the hobby, I have known many men who could not maintain a stable relationship with a woman who is smarter, and better paid than him. I had a good friend who ended up splitting from his wife because she made 100k more than him, and he felt inferior. He often told me how much it bothered him.Coming from someone who is not rich $$$ wise, luckily its never cluttered my mind , when I had a GF who made more than me. In those cases, sometimes, or maybe always, she  desires to pay for dinner and vacation, take her car because its much nicer, etc., and it makes her feel good, while not making me feel bad. Some high power women have high power ego's that crave to be stroked ,just like some men. I have no problem stroking ladies when they make more bucks than me.
I wouldn't want to sponge off of a lady just because she's well off, but if we have fun together, and she wants to pay more than normal , you won't hear me complaining.
To answer the question sometimes I have to pay in one form or another but not always.

No, I better not say anything more. I was asked to be a good boy for a while so I'll just let the statement stand without getting into detail. ;)

In the hobby world, it's pretty much up front.  Though once relationships deepen in this arena, it can become confusing, but the envelope always gives us power over our destiny.

As for civvie world, I walked away years ago.  The financial cost was considerable but tolerable.  It was the endgame that always killed me...

This is true. I won't bore you with an explanation as I think it is fairly obvious.

Certainly some relationships are based on the material things. What you can/cannot give the other.

Other relationships it is what you give them emotionally, or in actions.

There are people in relationships because they enjoy doing their own thing together.

In one way or another we all pay for the relationship, but a real relationship isn't just sex.
