Back in the '90's I had a few experiences trying to see providers. I was in my 20's then, most of the women I tried to ask out rejected me, and I tried escorts.

(I was married in 2001 when I was 32, and I was happily married for 17 years until my wife passed away from cancer in 2018.)

In the 90's we didn't have TER. Heck, we didn't even have the internet until the late '90's. A lot of people didn't even have cell phones in the '90's (I didn't). So finding escorts was a lot more challenging.

I discovered that in the yellow pages, if you looked up Escorts, you would find dozens of numbers for escorts. However, calling these numbers was a crap shoot. A lot of escort services continually had to change their numbers (to avoid LE) or some just outright went out of business. There were some "escort" services which were scammers. So you never knew what you would get when you tried to call one of these numbers.

It was particularly awkward if you called one of the numbers and the person answering said "Hello?" You didn't know if you were speaking to an agency or some random person who had gotten that phone number because the agency had to change its number or went out of business. You could try saying, "Is this ABC Escorts?" and hope the person said, "Yes." Sometimes the person would say "WHAT? Who is this?" and you had to hang up really fast. Back then we didn't have caller ID, you had to call star-69 to find out the number of the person who just called you, and if anyone did that they'd get the hotel number.

Back then, the escorts were all outbound. They were very limited in where they would go, most of them would only go to hotels, not residences. They were all driven to their hotels by bodyguard/pimps.

The escorts would not kiss you back then. They would not perform BJs unless you had a condom on.  

So you would go check in at a hotel and start calling escort numbers in the yellow pages and hope you got in touch with someone. I had some good experiences, some experiences when I couldn't get in touch with an agency and I just wound up wasting money on a hotel room I didn't need, and some experiences getting scammed.  

The way it was supposed to work, when you called the numbers, a rep from the agency would answer, take your information and ask what type of woman you were interested in. Then they would have a lady call you back who met your qualifications and set up an appointment.

But scammers were out there to take advantage of you. One time I called an agency and they had a woman call me back who described herself as tall and voluptuous and she sounded like the type of woman who would really turn me on. She said she would be at my hotel room in 45 minutes. Fifteen minutes later there was a knock on my door and it was a short heavyset older woman who looked and sounded nothing like the woman I had talked with on the phone. She said that woman had gotten sick and she was sent to me to replace her, but she would take care of me. I paid her the fee and then she started giving me a covered BJ. I tried to touch her and she said, No, all I was going to get was a BJ. I was p****ed because I had already paid the fee and she wasn't even the woman I thought I would be getting. I asked for my money back. She called her "manager" and handed me the phone and the "manager" told me I couldn't get a refund. I told the woman to leave because she wasn't turning me on. Five minutes after she left, the first woman called me back. She said she had gotten held up in traffic but would be there in ten minutes. I was like, "What? Some other woman already showed up and said you were sick! I paid her and she wouldn't even do anything!" The first woman was very apologetic and said they had had some issues with other agencies tapping into their phone lines and stealing their clients. She said she would still come out and take care of me. At that point I didn't have any money left, so I said forget it.

Another time, a provider showed up and said her rate was $100 for an hour. She was hot so I spent an hour with her. At the end of the hour she asked if I wanted more time, I said No, and she left. Five minutes later there was a knock at my door. A guy three times bigger than me was there. He said he was her driver and that I had not paid the full rate of $200. I told him she accepted my $100 payment and didn't have an issue with it. He said no, that I had to pay another hundred or I would be beaten up. I didn't even have $100 on me. I scraped together $45, including $5 in change. He glared at me and I thought he would still beat me up and leave me half dead on the hotel room floor. But he took my money and left.

One time, after making several phone numbers to wrong numbers and not getting in touch with an escort agency, the hotel phone rang and it was the guy at the front office asking me why I was using the phone so much. He said he would be watching my room to see if I was trying to make drug deals. That scared the crap out of me so I quit trying to call at that point and checked out.

One provider who showed up was sloshed. She giggled all the way through the session and said she'd had two tequilas before she got to me. You could smell the alcohol on her clothes and her breath. She asked if I had any alcohol. I didn't and I just went through the motions with her until the hour was up.  

But not all of the sessions back then were scams or bad. I did meet a wonderful hot provider named "Rain." I called her agency and asked for her several times and she would always give me two hours and only charge me for one. She said I was her favorite client. She said her other job was putting haunted houses together. Unfortunately, after seeing her three times, her agency changed its number or went out of business, because calling her agency got me a disconnected number. I tried calling other agencies and asking for "Rain" but couldn't find her.

Dude, all that and more.  You just never knew what you were going to get what with the scammers, fakers and outright thieves. It was shocking when you actually met a hot girl, she didn't upsell you, and she actually put out.  And if all that happened, she'd disappear in a couple of weeks.  

When I moved to LA the standard rate was 250-300.  I found one madam who had a reliable team of girls but even amongst them there was the occasional dud. As for finding a duo--good luck. If you asked for that some ladies would presume that there was a bachelor party going on and they wanted no part of it. A couple asked me if I was on drugs. And a few who showed up faked it--they would peck each other on the cheek and call it a day.

It was by turns exhilarating and exhausting.

So it was pre-internet, but my experience was different from yours. I bought tabloid-sized guides with ads featuring fake photos. They were for actual whorehouses in Manhattan. You'd call the # and they'd give you an address, generally for a brownstone apt. building. You'd arrive at the front door and look into a security camera to get buzzed in. Once upstairs a madam would show you to a sitting area where a few girls would be waiting for customers. You'd pick one and she'd take you to a small room and ask you to undress. When she came back to find you nekkid you'd pay her, she'd take the money and then return for the session. It was almost all no DFK, and everything covered. But it wasn't bad, that was just the way things were.
Over time I found 4 or 5 decent places and if I didn't like the selection at the first one I'd leave and try the next one until I found someone I wanted to fuck. It was actually a lot of fun and I never got scammed. No drama, the way things could be in the 2010s before everything went to shit.

and since I grew up "on the wrong side of the tracks" complete with pimps, hookers, drug dealers et al, none of what the OP described was particularly "scary" to me.  

 
I will confess to one time that I feared for my life, but it was only about ten years ago in Cartagena Colombia when the taxi driver took us deep into the worst part of town with nary a gringo to be found within 20 miles, and the first thing I noticed was that "security" was armed with a machine gun. Back to the 70's through the 90's, yes the yellow pages were very hit and miss, but there were always street walkers, strippers, hookers "working" hotel bars, brothels and a thousand other ways that johns could find hookers. They had ads in those independent city papers and magazines in the late 80s and early 90s. A couple of places were really sketchy. In  1993 thru early 2000s there was a service in NC and the person on the end of the inquiring phone call had the reputation of giving very accurate descriptions of who would show up.

The internet has made it easier for scam and rip off artists to operate.  Sure, there are boards like this, but they can make some quick bucks before they are exposed.

No wonder Vegas agencies have always had such a bad  reputation. During the 80's in LV most of the upper end "casino girls" like you would always find hanging around the bar at places like Caesar's Palace went for no more than a hundred bucks, the street walkers working the strip got maybe half that much and if you went down to "8th and Ogden" downtown you could cut that rate in half again. lol

 
And yes, I know casino girls and street walkers have a horrible reputation, but your chances of getting rolled as a "local" who wouldn't be going home never to be seen again after getting "trick rolled" with his tail tucked between his legs like a tourist were actually pretty low. Except for dealing with agencies I have had very few problems with hookers in Vegas.

I started with streetwalkers in the 80s. I had a few not so good experiences, but those were just poor services by the girls. Looks were always good because if I met them on the street in person, there is no bait and switch.  (Although there were a few who looked really hot on the street but not so great when the clothes came off.) While seeing streetwalkers I never got robbed, scammed, or beaten by streetwalkers or pimps. I had 2 close calls with LE but nothing terrible. I had some really good streetwalker experiences and actually repeated multiple times with several. If I had a good time with a good looking girl I would seek her out again. A few called me a “regular customer.” The Waikiki streetwalkers were really hot. Some were indeed model material, more like “Pretty Woman” than the crack hos on the corner people think about when they think streetwalker.  GaG will attest to that, as I know he had some experience with Waikiki street girls in the 80s.  

In the 80s and 90s, besides the Waikiki streetwalkers, I also went to Japanese bath houses, and AMPs and used escort agencies and independents, found in yellow pages, and personal ads in the pennysaver classifieds. (One of the most famous TER Las Vegas escorts who even had a Playboy article written about her, actually started out in the Hawaii Pennysaver.)  

While for the most part there wasn’t GFE back then, there were certainly exceptions to the rule. One of my most memorable experiences was an escort in Reno in 1988. I made a little money gambling that evening and was horny and went back to my hotel room and called an agency right out of the phone book. No pictures, but they ask you to describe what kind of girl you are looking for. (Blonde, brunette, slender, busty, etc.) They sent exactly what I asked for, and service was amazing. I was a little surprised because we started out with a lot of DFK, and went into DATY, (both things that I never got previously from paid dates). She was definitely GFE, even though that term had not even been invented yet.  

Another great GFE experience was in ‘89 with a gal I had picked up hitchhiking. I was on another island for work, and was just out cruising at night in my convertible Mustang rental car, and saw a young couple hitchhiking. They were just coming from a nightclub and heading home. Since I was just out cruising and had no place in particular to go, I took them all the way to their house, and had a nice conversation. I thought they were girlfriend/boyfriend, and never expected action with her, though she was really hot. I just thought I could probably get some good info from them on fun things to do in their town, and where I could find some action. In that conversation I found out they were just roommates, and that she was actually “available” for a small fee. While the internet and TER certainly changed the way things are done in this biz, TER has never been big in Hawaii. I may not do things the way I did in the 80s and 90s. I use the internet, and try to research what I can. I don’t use the yellow pages or classified ads, but I still TOFTT, and in the age of TER I still have seen a lot more ladies that are not on TER than are on TER.

I have to agree that the "bad old days" really weren't so bad after all and today aint as good as it seems. (With my apologies to Billy Joel) I got plenty of pussy before the internet, I got plenty of pussy without even using the internet well after TER was created, and since I haven't lived in what would be called a "TER city" for several years, TER really doesn't affect my ability to get laid or the quality of the women I see, although it is another tool in the toolbox.

Yes, been there too. Do you remember the Commodore Hotel in Grand Central Station There was one of those places there too.

In the adult bookstores there were two tabloids - Action Guide and the Black Book - that had reviews of Manhattan’s brothel apartments and some individual providers, both incall and outcall. The photos were usually from the neck down, showing lingerie and stockings.

On 7th Avenue & W. 42nd Street, next to a famous diner whose name escapes me, and opposite a newsstand, was a burlesque house with private rooms in the back for private shows. I remember a long straight-run stair up to the entrance booth where you paid to enter, then through a turnstile into the small lobby. There were always several women standing there, so if you’d been there before and knew the routine, you could go straight to the private rooms with the girl of your choice.

Otherwise you could sit in the audience and watch the strippers. After their performance was over, each one would come into the audience to solicit private shows in the back rooms.  

There was one room that was longer than all the others, and as I was over 6 feet tall, I always told them that I’d go with them only if that room was available. The customer would then pay an additional $35 for the use of the room and negotiate the fee with the girl.

I always suspected that the newsstand at Street level was part of their operation, as the vendor would be the first one to see the vice squad raiding the place and send a signal upstairs to evacuate.  

I spent a lot of time in that place because you could just sit and watch the strippers without ever going into the back rooms, though I can’t remember ever doing that.

There's a mixture of info in your post.  When you say "burlesque house" are you talking about one the many converted 1920s theaters (with an actual stage, as in vaudeville shows, theater seating and a large 30+ foot movie screen) or are you talking about the peep show places that had small (6' x 15'), low stages for live shows?  There were several converted movie theaters on 42nd between 7th and 8th that returned to showing family movies after Times Square was cleaned up.

On the NW corner of 8th x 42nd was the Triple Treat Theater, opposite Port Authority: basement + 3 floors above. Peep shows (coin op movies), movie / video store, live shows, private live show booths, ... and turnstile type entry, just like a real theater. I do not remember the private rooms you were talking about.

There was no movie screen in the place I’m speaking of. (But I know what kind of place you’re talking about.) There was a stage and short runway with standard theater seats on both sides. And seats facing the stage. The name of the place was “New (can’t remember) Burlesque”. But it was definitely on 7th Avenue.

Let me correct myself. I just remembered that there was a Howard Johnson restaurant on the corner of Broadway and W. 46 Street, and this place was next door. I will try to find vintage photos of the area to find the whole name of the business.

Expanding the boundaries beyond just 42nd is straining my memory cells. There were quite a few more video peeps / live show places as well as a few  more "old" (1920s-1940s era) "real" converted theaters.  The stages in the "real" theaters were elevated at least 3' and maybe 4' or more. The storefront live show peep shows elevated by only 1' or 2' and the front row seats were well within groping distance of the show.

One of the big storefront peeps was ~48th - 50th on the east side of 6th. Three floors of activities and the home of the Green Door Theater (named after "Behind the Green Door" movie), complete with turnstile.

This is my recollection.  I used to frequent three movie or burlesque houses that had girls roaming and rooms in the back.

The one you are referring to on Broadway next to the Howard Johnson's was called The New Paris Theatre.   Girls roamed and rooms in the back.   I also frequented The Roxy Burlesk which was on 42nd Street, south side of the street closer to 8th.  Same thing, many girls roamed the audience and rooms in the back.   I used to see a latina girl with huge tits.

There was one other place I used to go, from research I believe it was called Broadway Burlesk, it was 49th I think between 7th and 8th.   Either at the New Paris or this place I used to see a tall, gorgeous blonde her name was Alexis.  I will never forget!

Other than the Russians, you're right SS, it was hit and miss.  LAXpress was about it.  The internet was in its infancy but ThatMall was around.  It started in about 1988 I believe. It's the oldest escort ad mall and is still in business.

I go back to mid 70s to Midwest Massage Parlors. Occaisionally I would find a lady who would DFK.  Most of the ladies were attractive. I would drop $125 back then for the hour.  One time I walked in on a Sting by Chicago’s finest.  I just wanted to check the ladies out and I had $17 on me.  And the cops were pissed because none of the hookers had seen me before, and I did not have enough to pay the $25 cover fee.  So the cops just harassed me, took my name down , wrote it on an index card, and told me if they caught me there again, I would go to Jail...Yada Yada Yada.

The Best service ever was out of the RDU area -SBR. I always opted for the Yellow Pages.  The thing I really liked about those days was that the escorts would get to your room in about 20-30 minutes.  You'd just call the agency and they'd ask you what type of girl you'd like to see and you'd say something like "Brunette and busty."  They'd ask you which hotel and room you were at, along with your first name, and they'd say something along the lines of "Oh, we've got the perfect girl for you.  Becky will be calling within five minutes".  Sure enough, the girl would ALWAYS call back immediately.  Then it would take about 20-30 minutes, any time of day, and they'd be at your room.  Once they were in your room the first thing they would usually do is 1.) ask if you were a cop, 2.) turn on the TV to make sure there wasn't a recording device in it, 3.) take a quick look through the bathroom and closets and finally ask for the donation - no envelope system back then.  Then, finally, they'd ask you what services you were interested in.  As a young guy I was usually kind of embarrassed about this but, I figured what the hell I'll just tell her and that will be that and then we can get on with it.

I probably saw about 30 escorts this way and I never had anyone show up that wasn't attractive or fell out of the description of what I gave the agency over the phone.  Like I said, the great thing about it was that they would be there right away.  No preplanning needed before the trip, all you had to do was give an agency a call when the urge built up.  The rates for the escorts in those days were about $130-$150 per hour.  They'd let you pop as many times as you could and this was usually discussed when they would ask you what services you were interested in.

A cab driver once told me to stay away from the escorts that hung out in the casinos so I always just used the Yellow Page ads.  It was definitely a different time, and in many ways it was more preferable than the way things are done now.  It was always kind of a thrill to wait and see how pretty the gal would be when she showed up to your room, but like I mentioned the escorts that I saw were always really nice, very good looking, prompt and delivered.  Great memories of escorts in Vegas during the 80s.
