Thought about bringing a bottle of wine on a date sometime. Truth is I don't know crap about wine, figured a 12 pack of Bud or a fifth if Wild Turkey probally not the best choice for a date. Hate to sound so backwards but seriously I'm a beer and bourbon guy. Need some of you sophisticated ladies to give an old country boy a lesson in society. I have enough sense to know you don't buy it at the 7 11 but that's the extent if my expertise. Figure if I show up with some white lightning in a Mason jar that would arouse suspicion. :0)

Any lady would be more than happy to help you out...just ask them and I am sure they would let you know what to bring. Then again, you could always grab some Tequila and do body shots...;)

If she's a shiksa...keep the wine for yourself as Pesach is just around the corner.

Many of the high end grocery stores in my area have a huge selection of just wines, I'm talking 6 isles of wines. You can spend alot of money on a bottle of wine but honestly a $20 to $35 bottle of wine is a good bottle of wine. My rule of thumb is that I never buy wine in a box, and never buy a bottle under $15 with my favorite right now running around $30.
Ask her what her preference is red or white? Chances are she will be very specific at this point and tell you exactly which type of wine she likes. Write it down because once you get to the wine market you will forget and you don't want to be wrong about it.
Personally I think it's a great touch and she will enjoy the thought and time you put into it.

With all of that said, I seriously have a bottle of moonshine in a mason jar in my liquor cabinet but I am from Louisianna and you know us swamp people know how to drink.

Best of luck,

MM

Pino. Santa Margrita. (Or something like that) Thats good
Shiraz. Australian stuff. Rosemont Estate (I think)
Merlot. Jared.
They are all cheaper wines that taste good.
Most of that fancy wine tastes like shit!
It is old, and sour. But they call that Dry.
Fuck Them, and their old refined asses.
They can't see.. Let alone taste...
I used to work as a waiter..
I gave those who thought they were getting the best...
Less than that..
Believe me guys.. You can't tell.
Watch me open the cork???  Ha!
You have no idea....
I'll give you a fancy cork to smell, or put down.
It didn't come out of your bottle though!!! LMAO! :D

To me. Wine is paired with food.
I don't drink it unless I am eating.

I would just bring the twelve pack.

Just as with the rest of us there is no one size fits all approach to which is the best wine to bring.  the ladies all have different tastes as us guys do.  Some of the ladies even put a preference on their website.   I personally would ask to make sure and I could not agree more with MagicMedic.  Write it down as you will not remember when you get to the store.  Besides that a lot of the wine names are very similar.  You do not want to show up with the wrong wine after asking which one to bring.

I took a part-time job in a fine wine & liquor store (In MA you can sell both in the same store, not so in a lot of other places I've been).

He wasn't paying much more than minimum wage, but he did give us our liquor at cost and I was hitting the sauce pretty good back then :-)

Anyway, my theory was to start bringing home a bottle of wine every few days, starting with the cheapest rotgut in the store and working my way up in price until I found a wine that I could both afford and enjoy.

Two wines that really stand out for me that I still enjoy today are from Louis Jadot - they have a Pouilly-Fuisse Chardonnay (white) that goes for about $25 a bottle, and a Gamay Beaujolais (red) that is only around $15 a bottle!

Now, if she is a connoisseur of very fine wines, I suppose she might turn up her nose at these two, but for the average person, they are delicious and have a broad appeal. And the names are very french and they have a cool label :-)

I never saw the point of developing a taste for wine that I could not afford, so I have never done taste-tests with $60 - $100+ bottles of wine (except the occasional Dom or Cristal at a New Year's Party), but I can say that I never found any wines at the $50 - $60 level that I enjoyed more than the Jadot wines.

Of course, as many other posters have said here - ask her!

Bring a red AND white wine. My personal favorites: Francis Coppola Merlot, Cakebread Cellars Chardonnay, or a Santa Margarita Pinot Grigio. Whichever one you don't finish, save it for another date. ; )

Malbecs are delicious red wines, and you can find wonderful bottles in the $20-$30 range. Honestly, I don't think I've had a malbec that I didn't like and the most I've ever spent on a bottle is maybe $35. I've even found good ones at Walgreens anf CVS for less than $20.

Hope that helps!

It is a very nice gesture, but some provider are super sensitive about these things. I would no suggest asking if she is a recovering addict, but just ask if she would like a beverage. Personally, I am the one who provides this for my clients, but it is a nice change when they are the ones who bring a bottle of Cakebread or Quintessa...my two faves.

because those are my favorite.  They are great for high blood pressure too.

On the other hand, I've never known a gal to refuse Champagne, but be sure it is from France, and not the horse pee that comes from California or upstate New York.

Make sure there will be ice and an ice bucket where ever you are going, and some good champagne flutes too.

Here is another trick that can turn you into an overnight wine expert:  There is a magazine call The Wine Spectator, and the better liquor stores list their rating next to particular bottles.  Go with those rated 90 and above.  It's never steered me wrong, even for $12 bottles!

Finally:  Gals love cordials like Vandermint, Kahlua, and Amaretto.  You won't go wrong with those either.

Also, it should go without saying but I'll say it anyways:  Always bring liquids in s sealed container for her peace of mind.

Cheers!

Not in the initial email appt request but in a subsequent contact confirming our appt etc I will always ask "is there anything you would like me to bring? Wine ...red?...white?  Champagne?"

I happen to know a little bit about wines so if the lady replies she likes a dry white wine or a sweet red I know what to do. But still , one  should never be shy about asking the employee in the wine shop or even a grocery store even a 7-11 for some help. Often I'll ask if there is a particular lable she likes That simplifies things a little.

Don't forget to take a good opener.

At wine-tasting dinners, particular varieties of wines are carefully paired with specific dishes and brought out course by course. The seasonings often determine whether a recipe is best matched to this or that variety of red or some particular variety of white.

Although I've certainly not studied the matter, I suspect that performance of a BBBJ is best served by some variety of white. Perhaps a pinot grigio if he's cut, but a hefty chardonnay if he's uncut.

From my experience, I think a red is the best choice for DATY. The variety of red might be influenced by whether the lady is shaved or not.

Has anybody out there taken good notes on this kind of wine pairing? Not interested in brands and labels (any choice from a good region in a $20+ bottle will be fine). Cheap stuff only leads to a bad head the next morning. Pun intended.

... that the wine heightens the experience as it does for food. Please let's not discourage those people from commenting.  After all, the "D" in "DATY" does stand for "dining."
