What's with doctors these days?

I posted in Omega Zaps' thread below a thanks for everyone's concern about my absence. I really appreciate it.
I was out of town twice last week and got REALLY sick Sunday, and am just now feeling well enough to get on the computer, and of course TER was the first place to go! LOL

So, I went to the doc today, at my sister's pleading. Ok..
But, I was having a hard time breathing and the doc said come on down, so I dragged myself in. So, I ran down all the symptoms: extreme fatigue, muscle weakness, chills, sweats, nausea, vomiting (one day), difficulty breathing, achey-ness all over..and he asked 'fever?' No. No fever. Well, then you don't have the flu. You have to have a fever or you don't have the flu. The Health Officials who are tracking the number of reported Influenza cases have determined that the criteria for reported influenza must include fever, he said, tongue in cheek.
What??? Ok..so what do I have? He said, well, let's say it's non-specific viral crud. Again, tongue in cheek, smile on his face - "that's what you have. Non-specific viral crud".

So, everybody, I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Healthy, Happy New Year!

Stay warm, drink fluids, take your vitamins and get rest and keep colds, flu, and non-specific viral crud at bay!

Love ya,

Sedona

See...next year you'll skip the flu shot and have the Doc give you a shot for "non-specific viral crud."  Which is probably a flu shoot without the fever fighter, huh?

Hope you feel better fast.

Well, the unfortunate truth is that the technology IS available to narrow it down more than "non-specific viral crud." You could have had tests to identify infection with various adenoviruses, coxsackieviruses, parainfluenzaviruses, rhinoviruses, etc., probably at $$$ a pop (pun intended), but the results would return a few weeks later after you were well and couldn't affect your "treatment", because there really IS no treatment for these self-limited infections other than rest and chicken soup and aspirin and antihistamines. So, nobody does such testing.

Sometimes the CDC will sponsor testing in a community to learn what viruses are currently causiing "non-specific viral crud", and it's valuable epidemiologically, but not useful to the individual sufferer.

When the virus at issue is a real worry, the CDC does all KINDS of interesting monitoring; e.g., counting dead crows in agricultural areas and looking for infection in "sentinel chickens" to monitor West Nile Virus in the Western U.S.

More than once virtually the entire commercial supply of chickens for food have been destroyed in cities in China because of potentially dangerous Influenza epidemics in the chicken population

I got whacked by "non-specific viral crud" about 10 days before a business trip that was scheduled to include an overnight with a delightful lady. As I lay in bed dieting for 3.5 days, my only real concern was whether I'd be well enough for the liason and coughing infrequently enough not to scare her away :-)

Things worked out pretty well!

Great to have you back and glad to hear it's just viral crud.

Hell Sedona, I am not even an MD but I know what I would prescribe for you:  A nice Vick's chest rub followed by an "injection" or perhaps several. LOL  Hope you feel better soon!

Yes, he did hear that I was wheezing and prescribed an inhaler and cough stuff as he said there was bronchial spasming going on.
So, I'm banned from Christmas this year! My sister won't let me come over! LOL

Sure, I love roleplay! Wanna play Doctor? LOL

Get well, too, and I'm glad your lady was understanding and will reschedule. Good girl.
