My life has improved GREATLY since I decided physicians were mostly full of shit.

However, for legal reasons, it is important to allow someone to be one of the 100k people killed by medical errors and adverse drug reactions through OFFICIAL, licensed and approved channels rather than by me.

Don't assume that all providers get tested regularly.  If she let you stick it in she has no doubt let others do the same.  Go get tested.

Which is why I'm posting under an alias, because I'm also embarassed by what happened last night.   And, since I know I'm an idiot, can I please ask you not to respond by telling me that's what I am.  Also, I am NOT trying to grandstand, only get some info.  OK.  Saw a well-reviewed, veteran provider day before yesterday, early afternoon, at her condo.  Let's just say it's in the Mountain Time Zone and leave it at that.  Without revealing too many details, in an effort to help me get a second pop she ended up putting my uncovered unit inside her.  I think she just got so turned on she couldn't help it.  I was too stupid to stop her, though I managed to pull out (and yes, I know about pre-cum and am sure I did it early enough to avoid that) before coming again.  Now I'm worried I may have caught something.  I was on Cipro for an infection until a few days prior, so I probably don't have to worry about bacterial STDs.  Then there's HIV, though since most providers test themselves regularly, I probably don't have to worry about that either.  What am I missing?  Is there anything else I should be concerned about and, if so, what is it and what should I do?  Is this a subject more appropriate for The Erotic Highway?  I haven't been on that board.  Can I also post this there and not have a problem with the moderators? Any advice would be appreciated.

What you need is to talk to a competent physician, and tell him that you went bareback with a prostitute. He will give you lots of advice. Some of which you will ignore, and some of which you should not ignore.

Just how many providers statistically speaking get tested regularly. You can never find that out as they will always tell you they do so; only those who show up on their free will could get surveyed (I still bet you someone has collected some useless data out there). No providers would freely admit not getting tested just like they wouldn't admit to practice bareback with strangers. Same could be said about guys who are attracted to young looking ladies; they will always make sure to reinforce they'd never touched someone 6 months under the legal age like it makes a big moral difference i.e. when a chick is 17 3/4 y/o she's much different then on her 18th birthday. All sorts of moral taboos even in this underground illegal activity.

Yes, I know you don't have symptoms, but I could sense at least 3 STDs in your body, 1 of them quite serious.  But I cured you.

Ok, well.  I actually do have medical training.  But I'm a biomedical scientist, not a physician.

First -- don't freak out.  STD rates are actually much lower among European prostitutes and higher-end U.S. escorts than in the general sexually-active population.  Yes, working women are at risk for STDs, but they're also pros, and tend to be extraordinarily careful.  Their sex tends to be protected, and they tend to get checked regularly.  They don't want an STD any more than you.

Second -- DO get tested anyway, ASAP.  Type 'STD testing' into google.  There are lots of easy-to-use services that allow you to visit a local center, often the same day, and get your results within a week or two.  I've used these services, and it's quick and easy.  They'll take a urine and blood sample, and the full range of tests will cost $250-$400.  Note that many of the tests are antibody-based, which means you'll get false negatives until your body has a chance to react.  This takes a couple weeks.  Generally, the tests are most accurate after a month or so.  So sit tight.  There's nothing much you can find out just yet.  

I don't know whether you have a wife or girlfriend, but if you really think the provider was risky, then you definitely shouldn't have sex with your SO until you know whether you might be exposing them to something.  Anyone with multiple sexual partners should be getting tested regularly anyway.

If you've got a viral infection, you're SOL anyway.  There's no cure.  But the new anti-viral drugs for herpes are amazing.  I know someone who suffered from very frequent horrible outbreaks for decades, and now she's on the drugs (go generic; they're MUCH cheaper) and hasn't had a single outbreak in over a year.  Gotta take a pill one or twice a day (depending on the brand), though.  So...

Third -- PREVENTION is huge.  Obviously, it's too late if you've had unprotected sex.  But soap and water are very effective at reducing infection rates.  Do NOT be embarrassed about scrubbing yourself silly after sex.  I've seen providers do it.  I've done it.  I used to think it might be an insult, but a girl I respect told me 'oh no, not at all; it's nice to see that someone is careful.'  And then she noted that I was very good at washing my penis, and said not many guys know how to wash their penis properly.  Then she hopped in the shower with me.  And later became a good friend.  So don't be embarrassed to scrub up after you're done, wherever you can and as soon as you can.  I once scrubbed my crotch clean in a sink in the back of a bar after doing it with a sort of fishy-smelling Hungarian girl who was missing a couple teeth, even though we had used a condom.  She watched.  She didn't mind.  

Remember that condoms only protect the penis anyway.  Herpes, warts, crabs, molluscum contagiosum all get around condoms.  Always wash wash wash.  Ladies: you too.  

Leave the soap on for a minute or so -- a few seconds is not enough to kill stuff.  And be sure to get into all the cracks and folds.  Think about how surgeons wash their hands.

This isn't to say you couldn't catch all sorts of other things, but those are the two you're most likely to encounter.

The reason is the same in both cases- women are frequently unaware that they've got it, or in the case of herpes, that they're having an outbreak.

Fortunately, I've dodged the herpes bullet, but I've been given chlamydia twice, once from a GF and once from a provider.  And yes, this was back in the 80's and both situations were bareback.  Most guys aren't honest enough to admit that, but those are the facts.

After I got treated, I had a heck of a time convincing my GF that she needed to see a doctor.  She kept telling me she was fine and I was full of shit.  Then, she did something that really pissed me off- she lied about getting checked out.  As a result, she gave it to me AGAIN, and I had to go back on antibiotics a second time.  This finally got her to the doctor.

The reason for her denial soon became clear.  I thought we were monogamous, but found out through this little episode that she'd banged someone at the company Christmas party (Merry Christmas everyone) and got infected.  Hence, her reluctance to admit she had anything.

The provider was long gone, so I never had to deal with the issue of telling her or not.  This experience convinced me that you just can never tell with people.  Even good people, like my GF, will lie if confronted.  The bottom line is you just can't take anybody's word for anything, which is why you're getting all this advice to go get yourself checked out.  Chances are you're OK, but there's just no way of knowing that on your own.

I do a LOT of work with microbes as part of some of my research. It is an absolute fact that soap and water ASAP are very powerful preventatives for practically anything imaginable.

Most viruses and bacteria have a lipid covering. If that covering is disrupted, they die. Plain old soap is extremely disruptive to the lipid covering; bringing about death of the microbes in short order.

The key is timing. Do it as soon as possible.

Would be nice to think most providers are on another birth control method to complement condom use. Getting pregnant from a client is not something I want to experience, no offense.

A very similar scenario happened to me a few months ago.  The lady was kinda drunk, we were both into it, and before I knew it, bam!  And then 1 sec later, DAMN!!!  The lady got pissed when I asked her if she gets tested regularly, but it ended up OK with her.

I got tested through an on-line system that arranged a local lab to do the test.  I waited six weeks, which is what I figured out from on-line sources and the testing service.  The guy on the phone was totally cool, affiliated with a doc in another state (you never know where you're calling with an 800 number, right?).  Everything was anonymous, I used cash cards to pay, etc.  I wasn't going to go to my regular doc--those records stay there forever, though if there was a problem, I'd have to reconsider that.

No sex with my SO for those six weeks+.  I did a lot of reading on the topic.  Everyone freaks out about risk, but few talk about the relative magnitude of that risk.  Most sources talk about increased risk, which could mean anything from your risk is doubled or it is increased by a small amount.  Just hobbying increases the risk, but what does "increase" really mean?  I concluded from various sources that your risk increases by about 1% for every dangerous interaction.  On the other hand, a frequent standard for certain exposure scenarios is an increase of 1 in a million, so 1% is much more than that (10,000). There are all sorts of risks that one takes on a daily basis--just getting in the car, and what about smoking, etc? There are many books on risk assessment, and it's a multidimensional topic, so this is just my amateur's take on it.

Before the flaming starts, a disclaimer--this is just my conclusion, others will certainly have their conclusions.

Turned out that everything was clear.   I conclude from this and other reading that the risk is somewhat overblown, kinda like all the coverage on terrorism, imo.  Sure, there is a big risk for a big event, but on a daily basis, it's relatively rare. I read about guys hobbying for years with dozens of ladies, but hear about relatively few instances of actual infection under normal circumstances.  Perhaps that's a self-selecting population and my perception if flawed.  Dunno, the quality of my observations is limited to the depth of my experience, which is shallow and focused only on me.  But that's my take.  That said, I'm careful to avoid the bareback situation of course, though it doesn't really present itself--that one instance was totally out of the ordinary for both of us.

My bottom line:  be concerned, get the test, but don't overly stressed--it's pretty likely that you will be OK.
