I heard about this while watching UPN news last night (you know, Lauren Sanchez would make a superb stripper...).
I can't believe the ban was unanimously approved. Is everybody on the council that prudish? This is Los Angeles, not Salt Lake City.
And what's with this six-foot separation bullshit? If a dancer is sitting in a chair two feet away from me, I could be fined or put in jail? Are you shitting me!?!
Just when I thought floaters were exasperating enough, now state-licensed security gaurds are on duty during all hours of operation. Great, strip club sentinels.
Now here's a slippery slope if I've ever heard one:
"Supporters of the restrictions say adult cabarets contribute to prostitution, drug use and other illicit behavior."
Prostitution? I think the council is confusing strip clubs with massage parlors. Drugs? Frankly I don't see the connection. And let's get a definition of 'other illicit behavior.'
Let's hope this ruling is reversed quickly. I don't want to be rude, but where are all these L.A. strippers going to work? I don't think the majority of them have an accouting degree to fall back on. Does the city really want ex-strippers working low-skilled customer service jobs?
I bet these girls are feverishly looking for a sugar daddy to latch onto right now...
What's more, NN, is that the city council and all the voting housewives are unbelievedly nieve if they think this is the way to go about ending prostitution. A lot of those out-of-work strippers aren't going to be looking for low-skill customer sevice jobs. If they wanted to do that and could afford to live off the meager income, they would be doing it now instead of stripping. I wonder how many more escort adds we're going to find in the L.A. Weekly we're going to find now....
Three city council members in San Diego have recently been brought up on charges that they took illegal bribes from strip club people to keep rules in SD lax. Between this and the nationwide hard-on LE has these days because they have so much power from the fallout of 9/11 and Iraq that the social conservatives are flexing their muscle and the people who would support clubs don't dare open their mouth, of course the council approved the ban.
Of course, clubs in Industry or Long Beach or Huntington Park are just thinking "Yowza!... Christmas bonus is gonna be awesome this year!", but we'll see how much it really affects business at the LA clubs. Same thing passed in SD a couple of years ago, and it really didnt make much difference.
Besides, everyone knows that SF has the best clubs...
The city council here in Tampa passed a six foot rule a few years back...just before the Super Bowl came to town. It is rarely enforced and is being resisted with court battles led by local strip club icon, Joe Redner. Seems like this is just another ordinance that is on the books to allow an occasional sweep when the city wants to scrape up a few bucks and give the perception that they are "cleaning up" the city. With all the millions of tourists that visit Florida every year, this cannot be enforced with much vigor. Strip clubs will always draw a large chunk of those tourists (at least the male tourists) and their dollars.
