A great program to have if are going to surf porn and related sites is Malwarebytes Anti-Malware.  ONLY use http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free to download and it will take you to a majorgeeks.com site to download the free one.  This is always the first thing I run if my computer gets attached (which is more of matter of when then if when you visit porn sites).  If your not very computer savvy the $30 product is a great way to stay out of trouble.

Another great free tool is Spybot Search and Destroy you can get at http://www.safer-networking.org  It has a "immunize" feature that adds protection and is good to run a scan every few weeks.

Lastly running FireFox as your browser with "Better Privacy" and "AdBlock Plus" (all free) will give you protection from scripts and other nasty things you will find on porn sites.

& many tmes can't be prevented by anti-virus & spyware programs. It's a "trojan horse" where bogus Internet Explorer flags & warnings are displayed ( most notably, false control panel readings that your computer is infected ) in a scam attempt to use your credit card to contact these crooks, who try to weasel $ & personal financial info out of your computer.

If you see this come up, DO NOT CLICK ON ANYTHING ! Just reboot your computer & the fucking thing will disappear.

As for security systems, I find Avira anti-virus & Super Anti Spyware to be pretty good.

I have a laptop that I use almost exclusively for hobbying.  It went down last week & I lost everything on the hard drive.  I run AVG free protection on it & it did not help. Anyone experiencing similar attacks recently.  Just wanted to make sure it wasn't from a common frequent hobby site.  I installed Avast anti-virus & I have salvaged my laptop, deleted 100 infected files, & am up & running.

I was a diehard PC user, until I got really tired of dealing with all the crap and I saw the light at the end of the tunnel ------>>> the Apple store!

I've been a Mac user for the past 5 years = same laptop, ZERO glitches.

The only thing I did over the years was to upgrade my browser from Safari to Leopard. And that was optional, I could be still be using Safari without any problems.

Isn't Safari the browser and Snow Leopard the operating system??? How do you upgrade from Safari to Leopard?

Using an alias, I could not edit my post, sorry.
I did mean to say - I bought my Macbook about 5 or 6 years ago to try out, as I was a skeptical PC user.
I got the first one they did put on the market, it came only in white at the time and did run Safari on Mac OS X (older version) with 1 gig of memory.
After few years, it got to the point when I needed more memory for my stuff, so the only thing I did was to upgrade from my original system to Snow Leopard when it came out - now I have 4 gigs of memory and it runs faster too.
Never had one single problem with my laptop and I'm a happy 'Mac follower'.

Getting a mac would definitely solve the problems.

If you're using a windows based machine, I highly recommend two programs that are not only FREE but work better than anything else I've ever seen.

They also use very little of your computer's resources, unlike symantec which slows a machine down as if it were a virus.

For virus protection: www.free-av.com
Make sure you put the hyphen in the address.

For spyware:
www.spybot.info

I run a dozen windows machines 24/7 and as long as I update and scan weekly, these two software programs keep everything running like a champ.

Of course all my macs run flawlessly without having to do anything....

You could just spend $25-$50 yearly and subscribe for a good security software package. Macs are ripoff hype. Great box but ridiculously overpriced.

You get what you pay for. Freeware sux. I spend $50 anum for system security. Not a hiccup in 15+ years on my personal network. www.zonelabs.com makes good stuff.

Free anti-virus will never be the best anti-virus.

I've been a Mac user for over 20 years and I can't recall ever having any serious attack on my computer.  Nor can I remember any other Mac user ever mentioning a malicious virus destroying their data.  On the other hand there are millions of stories of trashed PC's out there that got some bug.  And it's not just a simple matter of market share because if that were the case there would be a proportional amount of trashed Macs out there which there simply aren't.  I work at a major university and in my department we have literally hundreds of Macs and PC's.  Anytime the IT guys come over it's always to service the PC's for some corrupt files caused by malicious software.  Never have I seen an IT guy have to wipe out the hard drive on a Mac and rebuild.
Macs cost more than PC's because quite simply they are a better product and OS.  For those of us that are not tech geeks and don't know about Unix or system architecture or where the parts are sourced or what directory to go to to find a file,  Mac is simply better designed hardware and software and that is why there stuff looks better, holds up better, and is easier to use.   It's a better value for the money.
As an analogy and simple illustration consider the $80.00 a pop provider and the $300.00 one.  Chances are the lower priced model will get the job done and may actually be attractive an even a bit skilled.  But chances are she'll probably be a bit rough around the edges, maybe a little gritty and her boyfriend might be in the next room along with the meth lab.  The $300.00 girl on the other hand will probably be more intelligent put on a better act,  wear better panties, smell better and overall you'll most likely have a better experience.  Same deal with computers,  PC's will get the job done but it's a mediocre experience at best and the products are generally clunky and ugly.
