Vanilla??? Seriously???

I use to use a vanilla body spray, with a vanilla body lotion as "my scent"  - I received a lot of complements about it from women... then a funny thing happened... a lady friend of mine told me that was not "maculine" then I asked my kids... they offered that she was correct - I did not smell "masculine"!???

So I saw some fragrances in the store the other day - brought back memories from my yut... canoe, English leather, British Sterling... etc...

I bought a "set of these" but the fragrances do not smell as I remember...   now my question...

ladies - what smell on a man does it for you - and in there I include "au naturale..."

Please be candid - I am really curious...

Many, many fragrances use patchouli in the mixture of what becomes their signature fragrance. Myself, I prefer the essential oil unmixed with any other fragrance. I bet you will like it, and so will your lady friends.

Vanilla is sort of unsophisticated. Not many guys, nor girls over 25 wear it. Here are a few things you can try that are a little more with the times:

Comme de Garcons – any of the perfumes in the incense series
L'Artisan Parfeumer – Dzongkha
Hermes - Terre D'Hermes
Dior Homme
Helmut Lang – Cuiron por Homme (this one is no longer in production but can be found pretty cheap on E-Bay)
Hermes – Vetiver Tonka

All of these are pretty laid back scents that you can wear to the office and/or everyday. There are really a ton of good scents out there although there are many more bad and uninteresting ones. Nowadays a lot of guys are comfortable wearing relatively sweet, unisex scents. For example, the primary note in Dior Homme is Iris. But the masculine scents are fun too. If you can get a sample of Dzonkha or Terre D'Hermes you'll see how cool a male scent can be.

I dislike cologne and most perfumes. They give me a headache and make me sneeze. A lightly scented lotion is usually about all the fragrance I can tolerate.

a half-cooked parsnip under each arm, and hope for the best.

Have you tried candy-apple spray? Cotton candy? Butter pecan?

Only kidding. I have two daughters under the age of ten who both have vanilla sprays in their arsenals. A stroll by their bedrooms or bathrooms, or a quick hug, has me smelling like a dessert shop for hours.

I agree with G12 that GB Grey Flannel is a good choice, but there are numerous quality options out there and not all cost as much as a date with your ATF.

On a side note also in reference to your post, I am thankful to have people (all are women) in my life that will be honest with me too. I am a guy after all and need help with this kind of stuff.

was my very first encounter. These days I normally shower immediately before and avoid all scent, but that time I met a very young and very beautiful provider with a bit of an unusual cologne on. After we had bounced around for about 45 minutes, she lay snuggled in my chest crooning about how nice I smelled. I couldn't get her to move which was fine with me. It was a wonderful, intimate moment. Unfortunately she left the business soon after. I still have a bottle of perfume that I bought for her that I was planning to give her on our next meeting. I haven't found anyone else yet that it would suit. (If there's anyone out there 18-23 who likes ginger, pm me.)

English Leather stick, but only in the butt crack.  Then some Axe - spray a cloud and walk through it naked.  Then tear open a packet of powder sugar and sprinkle on your cock, balls and asshole.

Your are now ready.

I have a beard so I don't need an after shave lotion.  When my neck gets irritated, I do use a very light green tea after shave.  Generally though I go with clean skin and hair, odorless deodorant, well flossed, brushed, shampooed and smelling like my unadorned self.  I don't know if I make myself more or less attractive this way, so I am curious about the answers you get.

The next time I'm Starbucks I'll be sure to fill my pockets with powder sugar packets--this is really good information, thank you.  BTW, I like to eat a bag of LifeSavers Pepomint hard candies, just in case I embarrass myself.

This is all very interesting. Based on what I learned here prior to my first hobby experience, I groomed myself meticulously, just like a First Date - shower, shave, floss, brush, deoderant, decent clothes, etc. As far as I know, that was the right thing to do and the Date went just fine. I did feel badly that I hadn't gotten a haircut prior... oh well.

What it all adds up to, for me, is that people here on TER who go on these Dates really care to make a good impression. That is just so cool.

I am not really picky as long as its light and clean smelling.  Anything to heavy or over powering is sometimes sickening.

Reminds me of a comic (can't remember who) who told of his grandmother using vanilla as her perfume of choice, and how excited his grandpa got whenever she would bake sugar-cookies.

As for myself, a combination of healthy diet and the old fresh out of the shower smell seems to work fine. Fresh out of the shower smell is what I like on women. I seem to be allergic to many perfumes and colognes so I steer away from them.
