I've had retail sites for ten years, and the peak traffic times are afternoons. Second is about 9 to 11 pm. I guess it doesn't matter if it's providers or binoculars.
any idea of the science behind that? I would have thought early evening.

The afternoon/after lunch lull is a great time to go online shopping. Great for the consumer because they make money while shopping at work, and great for the retailer because they make money by people making purchases when their mind isn't at it's peak… i.e. buying shit just to pass time.
I suppose it depends upon the demographic. For mine, the person is likely having dinner with the family, putting the kids to bed, etc. Then it's time to go shopping.
I've known a lot of people who arranged their offices so the monitor faced away from the door.
