LE undercover setting up a wouldbe child molestor online, enticing them to come meet a "willing" underage girl for sex (although the girl that LE uses in the sting is actually over 18; she just looks 13-17). If you show up, they bust you. If you don't, they don't. Unless the guy is dumb enough to provide some way to contact him (phone number, address, etc.), they can't really do anything if the guy is a no-show.
In regards to a prostitution sting, I suppose LE could try to track them down by tracing a phone call or tracking their IP address (if contact was made online), but I would think that wouldn't be very cost effective for them to pursue in relation to the "crime" being committed.
Let's say you (the hobbyist) contacted someone on CL who didn't have multiple reviews. (Yeah yeah, I know, most of us are smarter than that, but the subject line says "hypothetical", so bear with me.) The ad is a sting, with LE sitting in their offices eating donuts while watching e-mails come in. The appointment time rolls around, but for whatever reason, you don't show up at the hotel where they told you to go. Would LE be able to prove any criminal intent on your part? Or would they simply sit around feeling frustrated about missing their chance to ruin someone's life?
This situation can also work the other way, with the provider being contacted by a LE posing as a hobbyist. In the end, the LE ends up sitting in the hotel room all day with no one showing up. In this case, would the result still be the same?
