I found a few articles stating it is illegal for a provider to carry condoms. It was even mentioned on a Client Etiquette list. I figured it would be smarter for me to carry my own condoms and not depend on my date to carry reliable condoms or any at all.

Don't show this to Judge Judy, but ... I don't think carrying condoms is illegal anywhere in the US. I have actually seen people purchase condoms at the local drug stores and not get arrested on their way out!

However, from TER, crime shows and movies, it seems that LE adds it as piece of evidence to prove that you were thinking about having sex.  By combining:
1. Standing in hotel lobby without being a registered guest
2. Dressed nicely in clean clothes, just like most other working women in the city
3. Attractively made up, just like most other working women in the city
4. Carrying more than $100 cash in your pocketbook
5. Carrying one or more adult toys in your bag  
... ... ...
... Package of condoms in your bag

Add that up and you get proof that you must be a prostitute and subject to arrest.

I think that only works on TV. And even that is limited to reruns from the 1970s.

Some areas have at least considered passing laws saying that possession of condoms can not be used in court as evidence in a criminal case, but I'm not sure that has gotten anywhere.  In any case, it's not a bad idea to carry your own in a sealed carton just in case.

You can possess a licensed gun in NJ IF you are traveling through the state or to and from a shooting range and the gun is unloaded and secured and licenses in another state.  
If you are found with a licensed gun in your possession, hotel room etc under any there conditions ---unless you are a law officer-- that is punishable by ---get this-- up tp TEN YEARS in prison.
Many people from say states like Pennsylvania and Virginia have been arrested tho they seldom spend time in prison if the mistake is "innocent" tho they do get convicted of a felony with all that carries.
These sentences are similar (Literally ten years) in New York and DC but they are more narrow so even entering NY with an unloaded and secured gun can get you charged and convicted.
I do admit guns are more dangerous than condoms if both are used as intended so I am glad that condom carrying is not illegal in any state bordering Pennsylvania. (Tho I don't know the laws of all bordering states -- like Ohio and W. Va.)

Everything is evidence.  But not all evidence is particularly damning.  It's all situational.  You wouldn't be convicted of prostitution merely because you had condoms in your purse.  But if you are busted for prostitution because of verbally agreeing to perform sex for money, they would enter the possession of condoms as evidence.  The condoms aren't going to make or break the case.  You'd be convicted if you had them or didn't have them.   So might as well have them.

Other uses in emergencies are to:
    Stop bleeding (tourniquet)
    Prevent sand, dirt and water getting into wounds
    Carry water (average holds up to 2 liters)
    Use as surgical gloves to help prevent spreading infections
    Cover a dick to help prevent STI and pregnancy during sex

So cops use it to bully the innocent or the guilty they know they don't have hard evidence on right now. Would think if that was too often attempted and it was an innocent person there would be a serious law suit for both false arrest and defamation. So I suspect most of those taking a plea are actually at risk of getting caught for something if they go to trial.

that said, I certainly think the whole "circumstantial" evidence like this is wildly misused by LE -- especially in both this world (P4P) in the recreational drug use case. It's like accusing a 15 yo kid of drinking because their swiss army knife has a bottle opener.
