given these choices?

Reference from a respected hobbyist who you have seen.
Reference from a respected provider you have never seen or met.

I know there is some ambiguity to the question, but I am curious as to the weight given in general assuming that all things are relative and equal between the two.

PS: This question is for providers, not the hobbyist board blowhards.

You'd think asking us hobbyist board blowhards to NOT repond like that is just asking for it.

Some people's kids..... ;)

But I've done both. I've referred guys, and I've been referred by ther ladies.

Fucking cheers!

Only one provider was able to figure it out, therefor your penny was better the zero.
Maye I will start a thread about my dogs and throw in some expletives.

It would have to be the established hobbyist. I would rather have someone who has actually met me be a reference.

...unless the hobbyist has also been BCD with the client in question. *wolf whistle* There are just some things you can't know about a gentleman until you've been BCD with him.

I have never met ANY of the ladies I have contacted for references. As long as she's legitimate, established, respectable, independent, still active, and has seen the client recently, I'm happy. Oh, and she has to actually reply to my email in time too. :D

Not appreciated this time, but noted. I got the question in the first place. I'm sure the rest did too.

My answer to the question: The third choice which is "it depends." It depends entirely on the persons involved. I've never met Allure` or SexyWench or maturebrigette, but I'd accept a reference from any of them. I'd also accept a reference from a few of my hobbyists regulars, but not all of them.

BTW, there is nearly always a third choice, even if it's to accept neither choice offered and to make another. There's an old Twilight Zone episode that illustrates that quite vividly; the humans made a choice that the aliens hadn't planned on, which scrapped the aliens' plans to overtake Earth.

Although you attempted to answer the question in your second paragraph. I will give you a B for effort.

I am not sure which episode you are talking about, but I am sure you remember the one with the cookbook, To Serve Man.

But it's no replacement for screening that friend, through either provider references or employment verification. It's like the security lines at the airport -- everyone has to go through the process.

But in this case he'll probably (hopefully!) really enjoy the pat down and strip search. :D
