Techie problem, has anyone encoutered this?....

I just got a new computer.  It is running Windows 7, business version, just like my last computer had.  I use IE for the browser.

Since getting it, there has been a delay of anywhere from 5-10 seconds every time I want to open  or close a post or thread.  This only happens on TER.  I visit 5 other boards and have not had any problem with them.  I had no such problem with the previous computer.

I'm using Classic, but there is also a delay on the new TER, but less so.

Any ideas on how to counter act this?

I thank you all muchly.

5-10 seconds to open a thread/post? I don't think I've encountered that problem.

Since you said it didn't happen on your old computer, it might be something with your computer.

But then again, you said it only happens on TER, so it might be a temporary server delay.

... issues is a common problem with websites like TER.

That is largely due to their servers being slow.

If you go onto USA Today or Microsoft, those websites are FAST. Why? Mainframe servers galore and those kinds of websites have multiple mainframes scattered all over the country and the world. If one goes down... another mainframe server takes over.

Not with TER, TER isn't that big to justify those huge mainframes.

In the meantime, try using either Chrome or Firefox and see if that helps with the page loading issue. I am currently using Chrome.

For email account security, you can opt in for 2-step verification (once password checked, they will send you a code to your cell for you to enter). I think it's done weekly. They will also shut down your email account if they suspect that it's been hacked (it happened to me once). You will need to reset password to gain access.

I'm not sure who told you that your site doesn't work in Chrome, but it works fine for me.  I have used Chrome almost exclusively since it was first released, and rarely have a problem with it.  Your site is fine from what I can tell, and I am using the latest version of Chrome.

Because I had the same problem with Yahoo.  Then someone told me that Windows 7 was not formulated for the new Yahoo format that came in about a year ago.  Up till then Yahoo was fine.

When I got the new Windows 7 for my new computer it had a patch to fix the Yahoo problem, and now Yahoo works great.

Try finding that patch and see if that helps.

It gets to be a pain to 'approve/whitelist' each site/script to make a site work but the upside is you quickly learn about all of the tracking functions on different websites and it's kind of scary.

You can temporarily approve a site or script or whitelist it so you don't have to each time. Depends on if others use your computer and your level of paranoia.

The upside is sites load a lot faster since they don't have to download huge pics, videos or ads from third party bottom feeders before the main pages load.

If the site still loads slowly, then it's your connection. Use speedtest.net and see if you are getting the speeds promised by your ISP. A crappy modem or router might also be a cuplrit.

Chrome also has some good blocking plugins but it's not as customizable as firefox/noscript.

I use IE only for certain sites that require it (USPS.com doesn't seem to work right with other browsers).

London,

Why don't you drop the crappy Yahoo and go with GMail/Google?
Far less unwanted advertisements and their pages load up faster than Yahoo.

Just a suggestion...

and there is still some delay, but more like 2-3 seconds instead of 5-10 seconds, so that is a big improvement.

It just bugs me that I have to switch over.

One think I noticed is that Google Chrome has a built in spell check of sorts.  The kind that puts a wavy red line under any word that is spelled wrong.

But I have a macbook, and run mt lion and safari. I doubt it has anything to do with IE.

people seem to use the Yahoo to email me, and I don't want to just swap over without a way to let everyone know who has been using that account. I am certainly not going to send out a mass mailer.

... that Chrome doesn't work has misinformed you.

I went to your website using Chrome and had ZERO problems.

Your website works beautifully on my macs, using Safari, Firefox, and Google Chrome.

Also works well on an ipad2 on Safari and with Opera browser app.

One problem I have with switching browsers is that I have all my passwords stored in the one I am using, and typically forget them. Switching means I usually have to reset everything! :( Same with a crash. Blech. Had a few of those recently. :( And then there are my favorite pages stored in bookmarks- often things I will want to go back to in a couple weeks or so when I have forgotten how to get there lest I have a bookmark.

hooker board logins, and 2 for me personally. I don't exactly use my London email for facebook...too easy to trace right back to my real name.

For Firefox they are found under "Tools" / "Add-Ons" and perform a query search for 'No-script' and 'ad-blocker'.
