This is my score.  It sounds pretty good to me, but I'm curious what some of you others have received.  Make sure you have included everything except for your e-mail addy when posting.  To get there http://www.emode.com/tests/uiq/result.jsp

Your IQ score is 122

This number is the result of a formula based on how many questions you answered correctly on Emode's Ultimate IQ test. Your IQ score is scientifically accurate; to read more about the science behind our IQ test, click here.

During the test, you answered four different types of questions — mathematical, visual-spatial, linguistic and logical. We analyzed how you did on those questions, which reveals the way your brain uniquely works.

We also compared your answers with others who have taken the test, and according to the sorts of questions you got correct, we can tell your Intellectual Type is an Insightful Linguist.

This means you are highly intelligent and have the natural fluency of a writer and the visual and spatial strengths of an artist. Those skills contribute to your creative and expressive mind. And that's just some of what we know about you from your test results.

Find out more about your unique intellectual strengths in your personalized 15-page IQ report. It's ready right now!

Mine was 133, but I don't remember what the analysis paragraph said.  It did say I was good with math, which would make anyone who knows me laugh hysterically. :)

I've tested repeatedly between 180 and 200.
But what's the point?  Do we get some kind of discount now?

Also IQ really doesn't have much to do with common sense or street smarts.   I have seen some extremely bright people do some awfully dumb stuff and you see apparently stupid people who live happy and productive lives.

There is also some cultural bias built into an IQ test which can't be helped.  For example if you took an IQ test in French and you don't speak French,  you are unlikely to do as well as if you took the test in your native language.

how do we know that some sort of ego-stroking is not behind this particular test or this site in general?

i mean, afterall they do want you to register and give out your (valuable) personal info (which they can then shop/mine for advertising/demographic use) so what's to say that instead of them telling you you're the sub-par "moron" that you really tested as (theoretically ;-)  they're not actually inflating your score so you don't go away feeling disappointed?

it's all about the advertising/demographic dollars!  LOL

to Orthodx's point.  The people that seem to do the best in our society have a high IQ and EQ (emotional).  You can have a very high IQ and not be able to function socially and visa versa.

I didn't take the test you posted. The last time i tested i was 140.The time prior to that test i was 135.
I think that artistic people have a greater chance of scoring higher, due to the visual part of the test.

Hi Charis,

Somebody did this to make $$$.  If you send me $300 I am willing to tell you your IQ is whatever # makes you happy.   I will even give you an official report.

I don't know your IQe.  I would expect your greater intelligence lies in being able to know when somebody is shucking you to get something from you ("I will really love you if only ...").

Appreciate your greater intelligence.  Other than me, most people don;t spend thier time writing or solving math problems.  There have been many times in my life when I would have traded IQ for practical skills...Harry

Now we all have very high, it not genius IQ's.  Funny, when I was in school, and we were actually being tested, there weren't nearly so many people with 130, 140, or 160 IQ's (or good grades either, for that matter).  The distribution was a bell curve, with 100 being defined as average.

It seems, however, that something magical has happened since I left grad school- nobody is just average anymore.  In fact, everybody got a lot smarter, and apparently a lot faster than I did.  And the New Age bell curve now is skewed dramtically to the right (toward the genius side, for all you newly minted geniuses who don't know what a bell cuve distribution is).

Of course, I've got the degrees, but they pale in comparison to the test in Cosmo, or elsewhere, that proves to their friends how smart they REALLY are- despite their C+ average in high school.  Still, I have to admire their undiscovered and unappreciated brilliance and marvel at the New Age definition of IQ.  Who knew that we'd progress so far that nearly everybody I knew would be a borderline, if not full fledged, genius.  And that the guy at Ace Hardware who could barely make change was really just an undiscovered Stephen Hawking.

I watched the "National IQ Test" special on Fox several months ago. I scored 125, and according to the scale shown at the end of the show, 118-130 was considered "average". However, I personally don't lend very much creedence to standardized exams such as this, or others like it.

The truth is many people just don't have the knack for doing well on these types of exams. These same people have the potential to be absolutely brilliant.

This is not to suggest that those who are able to score  well on these tests do not possess the intelligence these exams are alledged to prove. It's just unfair to suggest that some people lack the intelligence because they are unable to score very high.

For example:

Quite a while ago I read Colin Powell's autobiography. In it he states that when he applied for graduate school he was concerned that since he had a history of being a mediocre student in college, he would be unable to score high enough on the GRE.
The fact that he did score high enough to be admitted to grad school, he attributes to devine intervention. Say what you will, but that man is anything but stupid!

Albert Einstein would not have even graduated from college if his roomate hadn't taken notes for him in class. Why? Because Einstein was supposedly incapable of taking good notes. Was he stupid? I don't think so!

Just my opinion.

regardless of my numeric score, what exactly does the intellectual type mean?
just curious because my results yielded "word warrior" stating that one would likely have excellent verbal skill. yet, I seem to always find it necessary to repeat myself or explain my thoughts and ideas, for not being concise enough for others to understand clearly.

regardless, I agree that it's inflated scores to get your personal info for marketing, but just fun enough to waste a few minutes of my life.

Why would you be a member of an organization that you don't really think serves a purpose or deserves your participation?  By assuming the membership is primarily "geeks", it gives the impression of a feeling of superiority on your part...but by invoking the name of the organization in your post, it implies that the organization itself signifies some value in your mind.

Confused in San Diego.

When I was a kid my father went through this big deal about testing my brother and I to see if his superior intelligence was passed down the line. Admittedly he is a smart man as he has done some pretty amazing things in his life including passing the CA bar without going to Law school and suing the IRS and winning. He has also done some of the stupidest things I have ever witnessed in my life.

One summer he made my brother and I attend a camp for gifted children. In other words a place for the geeks and misfits to go because no one wanted to play with them during summer break. We both protested as we had no problem with our social lives and the idea of spending our summer improving our math skills and doing a critical analysis of One of Ayn Rands books made me instantly start plotting to get out of it. Took me less than two weeks to get booted from that hell hole and the experiences left me emotionally scarred. I haven't had  the desire to hang out with a group of people who embrace the numbers system for rating intelligence since then...well that is until now.

I am looking for a Date to attend one of the regional "party like a rock star" MENSA gatherings with me. I think that if attended with the right attitude and style of dress the ensuing hilarity would make for excellent story fodder.

You must either be a member of MENSA or have great party crashing skills, Be willing to drink like an irishmen at his best pals wake, and a love for highley innapropriate behavior.

The style of dress I prefer for this occasion is of course ...Pimp and Ho.

If you think you would be a good date for an event please e-mail me for an interview. I am looking to attend one in my area (socal) but if you're sexy and funny enough and would like to fly me to you I will attend anywhere and promise to be a sure thing to boot :)

It's overrated.  I value whatever wisdom I've been able to gain in my 50+ years than any so-called "intelligence".  This test seems to measure mostly the ability to perceive patterns, both visual and verbal.

My kids know the three characteristics I admire most in people - honest, hard-working, and compassionate (although as I've gotten older, I've slipped a little on hard-working! LOL).
Intelligent isn't on the list.

I simply feel that we'd be totally different. On the other hand, I could show up and run into all the other providers in my area. :-) I have a feeling it would be a lot like my gifted classes in grade school, and gifted classes were not fun for me. I was the only girl. All my friends made fun of me for being in gifted, and the boys in my classes didn't want anything to do with a girl who wasn't interested in Star Trek and computers.

I've been tested often enough, and consistently I get about 155. I would have expected the Emode test to pump up the value to stroke your ego and make you want to buy their services. They've lowered mine -- maybe they think I need a bit of an ego-bashing? Heh ...

I would like to know a few of the answers -- I categorically proved (to my own 155-IQ's satisfaction!) that at least two answers were correct on four questions, even though the test requires you to choose only one. Anyone else?

As far as "true IQ" goes, it doesn't go at all. It's an educationalists' myth. But the distinction between "street smarts" as opposed to "book smarts" is also a bit of a myth -- people who succeed at one or two mental things, generally succeed at many. The real problem is that IQ tests "test smarts", which is only tangentially related to either the "book" or the "street" variety.

I know my "EQ" used to be very low but I learned to "up" it artificially (but I don't know whether that's "test" smarts or "emotional" smarts), my math scores always outdistance my verbal scores, my personality type is generally "natural leader" (or "pathologically totalitarian dictator," depending on context), I should be a corporate executive or entrepeneur, I only like people when I'm ruling them, I am most fulfilled when making slightly more money than I think I am worth, I will consistently drive myself to a very high standard, and I hate slackers.

But I'm an unemployed writer: basically a verbal slacker with no leadership position at all. And I hate it. Go figure.

Test scores are going up in North America. We're ALL familiar with standardized tests nowadays, to the point that there are tests to test test-taking ability! This trend is documented in (among other places)

Sternberg, Robert J. _Successful Intelligence: How Practical and Creative Intelligence Determines Success in our LIves_. New York: Penguin, 1997. ISBN-0-452-279062

The book is DREADFUL. I do not recommend it. It is chock full of useful points about why IQ testing, and general standardized testing at an early age, don't work and unfairly cubby-hole kids. But it doesn't really offer much of a "how to" on any other forms of intelligence, or a PROOF of the author's rather lame speculations. He is a typical social scientist, unable to think outside the box of his own culture and stereotypy, because he lacks sufficient education of other cultures or historical periods, because he spends so danged much time in the social sciences. But if you need a good quote, or reference, about the problems with IQ tests, you can look this book up in the library and photocopy a few footnotes. But PLEASE don't give him any more royalties! Discourage him from EVER writing again! Please!

I saw this thread and a number of others on this TER board which discuss Mensa and Mensans from various perspectives. You might be surprised at the broad diversity and interests of Mensa's international membership. Let's first realize that there is significant controversy as to what constitutes intelligence, and there are those who hold that IQ tests merely measure what IQ tests measure. There would appear to be a correlation between higher scores and good language skills. A high score on an IQ test does not necessarily correlate with a high level of creativity, nor should it confused with common sense. Having been to a couple of Mensa local chapter meetings, I would observe that as with any group, including the TER membership, there is a great deal of diversity. Some of the folks are outgoing while some are shy. Some are "geeky" but most are not. Some are opinionated and spend significant time and energy expressing their opinions, while others spend more time listening and analyzing. Some folks are interesting and charismatic, and then there are those who are less so. There are some individuals whose interests and boundaries of experimentation are quite broad to the extent that those who participate on this TER discussion board would, I think, be quite surprised; like, really surprised!

In addition to local meetings, Mensa has special interest groups spanning a broad range of interests. In short, most Mensans are just decent folks looking for those with similar interests. Kind of sounds like the TER membership. I'd be willing to bet that most of you know people who you think of as "regular" people who unbeknownst to you are Mensans.
