Both parties are suspect -
Democrats: "Do what feels good for you.  Toleration is our motto, unless you're conservative - THAT we can't tolerate."
Republicans: "We'd like to limit government, but we want our government to tell you what's right in the bedroom."

I don't understand it....except I think they basically say whatever it takes to get elected.

If you agree ---please take 2 seconds and vote --

CNN is trying to prove the President wrong on his anti-gay
marriage stand... and we are losing 2-1.  If this concerns you, go to the site below ...follow your conscience ... and VOTE.

Then forward it on to all your friends, because this poll will be used by CNN to show how "out of date" the President is in his beliefs.

CNN Poll asks: Should marriage be legally defined as only a union between a man and a woman?

http://edition.cnn.com/2003/ALLPOLITICS/07/30/bush.gay.marriage/index.html

Three hours after you made this post, it was 51% for the hetero only, 49% against, out of 11 million responses.  The 2-1 figure either was a bit off, or one hell of a lot of people clicked on that survey in a very short time! :P

The survey has been posted for almost two weeks now.  I question whether CNN is trying to prove anyone wrong as much as posting a survey on a controversial subject as a ratings maintenence device.  Bush said very clearly in the weeks before the Iraq invasion that he doesn't care about survey numbers.

BTW, all the people who read this post may not be of like mind, so using the word "we" in your post is a bit leading.

Do you work there??  I thought CNN claims to be impartial?  Or are they providing "balance" to Fox?  Thasnks for the link though.  I cast my vote against homosexual marriage.  Looks like its 50/50 there now.

Well CNN polls are unworthless for determining anything but as we know sex and sex issues sells papers (or TV time). CNN is a profit company so one could argue that their highest duty is to the stock holders.

As to homesexual marriage, I think the best way to vote against this is to not get married to someone of the same sex. With all due  respect, what two other people do isn't mine nor your bussiness.

On the other hand, I'm willing to let them use the word marriage if  they gave back the word gay. Often I feel playful and happy but I have nothing to call it:-)  thx mr miller

"Prove the President wrong ..." that's some loaded language. I presume you simply mis-spoke?

The role of journalism is to consistently provide proof that someone is wrong, IF he's wrong; and proof that he's right, IF he's right; and do the research to prove the point. The current media climate among Television purveyors of nightly and live news (like CNN) is slanted very much to the right of center, given their business interests and need to provide "infotainment" to their viewership, so it would be likely if anything that CNN tends to "prove the President right."

For example, by not reporting on the failure to find Osama bin Laden or the weapons of mass destruction ... stories that "lets him slide" by omission; by not mentioning the atrocities in East Timor; by reporting on the G7 meetings but not the many other international summits; etc. Whether that "slants" media coverage or is simply fair decision-making is up to you, but IF THERE IS a slant on CNN it's definitely IN FAVOR of the typically American way of doing things, just as Al Jazera slants toward Arabs and BBC slants toward Brits.

My stand on gay marriage is, that an opinion poll should never decide someone else's home life. Opinion polls say there should not be legalized prostitution or legalized marijuana. Get the Right Wing's religion out of politics and government -- I live in America, I did'nt have to sign up for membership in their church, dammit! So what if gays marry? Does it somehow damage my life? NO! The true test of any civil right is, that it can be allowed as far as it does not impact upon other people's civil rights. This one fits that test fully, completely. Like ERA, nobody's FORCING the right-wingers to go out and act different after the passage of the law.

no discussion/mention of East Timor should ever go unconcluded without bringing up Henry Kissinger's role in that country's tragic fate ... just type "kissinger east timor" into Google(TM) and read away

or if you have A.D.D. (like me!) do yourself a favour and go see the documentary that our country's most honoured statesmen HK tried to block and then sue for libel (for branding him a war criminal, many times over)

THE TRIALS OF HENRY KISSINGER  -- by Christopher Hitchens

--

oh what a great "Republic" this is we live in!

I am reading the companion book to the Food TV show "A Cooks Tour," written by Anthony Bourdain.  One of the countries he visits is Cambodia.  He says that within five minutes of getting off the plane, he wanted to personally rip out Kissinger’s heart for what he did to the people of Cambodia.  There is a very strong argument to be made that, if we hadn't destroyed their infrastructure, the Khmer Rouge would never have been able to take control and kill more than a quarter of the population.  The man should be handed over to The Hague.

Light

"Cowards can never be moral."
M.K. Gandhi

... what Henry Kissinger did to Cambodia (along with a few other countries)

his heartlessness over the plight of the Cambodians, his nonchalantness over the rise of the Khmer Rouge, and ultimately his selfishness and deceit by "spinning" it all into something positive for 'his' precious administration is atrocious (why all his fault? hah! let's not kid ourselves about who was running this country when it came to foreign policy)

it amazes me that even to this day with all this stuff coming out from so many credible sources and other journalists besides Hitchens (who understandably "has it in" for Kissinger) that even now some prominent "statesmen" (like Alexander Hague and other notable Republicans, naturally!) come to Kissinger's defense

the man deserves to rot in the darkest dungeon in Hell for all eternity (if there was a Hell) ... the final coup-de-grace in that documentary was delivered by one of his ex-aides who said that (paraphrasing) "ultimately his punishment is that he has to live with himself"

Thought some of you would be intrested in it.

I do not work for CNN...

I did not write rhe message

Chill.............Ok

Hugs,

Me

One of my female cousins turned 62 yrs of age this past year.  She is a Registered Nurse who retired a number of years ago from a career in the Marine Corp.  She is a very caring and loving person.  She moved 2 years ago to Henderson NV to take a job in the Nevada State Prison system.  She met a lady her age through that job who had just gained custody of her three grandchildren (now ages 12, 10 & 9) who were crack babies, abused and neglected by their biologic parents (grandmother's daughter & son-in-law).  These children were terrors, apparently, failing all grades and subjects, had severe emotional and behavioral problems and were about to be expelled from the Henderson NV public school system.  My cousin began working with these kids on a daily basis, initially tutoring them to help with their school grades, but in fact, also worked on their behavior problems as well.  Now two years later, the two older children are model students getting A's and B's in school and their behavior has been impeccable for the past 6 months.  The youngest child still has behavior problems but has made "remarkable" improvement according to school psychologist and is getting B's & C's in school.

And Oh, BTW, my cousin and her friend (the grandmother turned foster mother) are going to celebrate the 1st anniversary of their "joining" this December.  My cousin and her friend are gay.  I have been honored with an invitation to this celebration and I plan to attend.

I have posted this same vignette to the Physician's on line forum with the exception of omitting the fact that my cousin and her friend are gay.  So far all of the dozen or so responses have been extremely favorable (who could argue otherwise).  I intend in a day or two to post the "rest of the story" to see how the responses will change, once sexual orientation becomes an issue.

When the "shrub" (aka Bush) whines about "Family Values" and pushes the agenda of the ignorant and prejudiced fanatics that seem to surround him in increasing numbers these days, I reflect on the acts of love, kindness, and humanity that my cousin and her significant other have made in the lives of 3 children who would have almost certainly been doomed without their efforts and intervention.

Certainly the "shrub" and his gestapo have offered nothing - and have nothing to offer -- these troubled children.  Instead, the "shrub" is pushing for legislation that would outlaw the relationship that will be the salvation of these kids and sanctioning only the biologic and heterosexual relationship that damaged and corrupted these kids.

Anyone who cannot see where the true morality of human behavior ends and the hypocrisy begins in this scenario is worthy only of contempt.

Good story. Tear-jerking heart-warming ... all that ... :)

Just goes to show  you, "family values" realy means (to the American right-wing) "our family's values" which often include prejudice and hate. A clear way, IMO, to view the current version of the two political parties in the American landscape is this:

Democrats: "we will enable you to be like yourself and do as you choose"
Republicans: "be like us or else we'll force you to"

Dear religious wierdos,
God doesn't need your help.

I have a hard time understanding how one can oppose gay marriage.  I suppose you can tell yourself that you're upholding God's will with man's law.  Its true that the bible has examples of God using man's judgement to execute His will.  I wonder what percentage object to it based not on religious reasons but because they're homophobic.  Some ignorant people still believe sexual orientation is a choice and don't want to encourage "that kind of behavior".  Ask yourself this...did you choose to desire women?  I have a few gay friends and I'm sympathetic to their lives.  At some level, this deprives them of certain legal rights that heterosexuals enjoy like being able to officially refer to it as spousal abuse :-)

Have a nice day,
