In my experience, the staff, living in the southwest, has predominantly been Hispanic.

Myself, I'm half. So, when I greet the nice lady that is there to clean my room, I start with 'Hola. Como estas? Mi llamo Miguel, y tu?'

I'm not trying to be a smart ass like I do here. I respect their position, and their livelihood.

As far as how to proceed, let your conscience be your guide. Just don't break too many rules, I hate to have to clean up messes the next morning, especially with a hangover.

hate it when I come in with a hangover. Their ineptitude seems to magnify. Mainly because I have no patience at that point and I really just want the day to be done and to go home.

I'm in that pleasant stage and I'll try to be nice.

I can't say I go out of my way to speak to housekeepers, unless they are in my path to the room. Then, it's a nod or a brief hello to act as if I belong. Smart ladies, are waiting for you and don't make you knock. I am hoping that most of them tip. I have never asked.

Hell..I AM the little people..LOL.  Actually those that labor so hard deserve far more than their employers tend to give. I tip my housekeeper at least $5 or $10 everyday...plus a nice note of appreciation.  I have yet to have one complain about messy rooms..empty champaign bottles...errant corks etc...  and God knows what they might find in my room.  Helps me..plus I really do like them.

The housekeeping staff members earn their money when I stay at a hotel. I only have to walk in a room and a whirlwind follows me in, sort of like the dust cloud that follows "Pigpen."

If I ask them to change my sheets, I'll leave $5 on the bed. If she's lucky to catch me in the room, I give her $5.

One time at Vegas, I booked a provider for a second meeting on the same trip because I won big. I got a bottle of Champagne, even though I don't drink, and put it on ice. Unfortunately, she NCNS'd and for a valid reason -- she got hurt in an accident. (I saw her a few weeks later and there were bad scars.)

The next morning when I left, I walked by a housekeeping staff who was cleaning a room. I told her that there's an unopened bottle of Champagne in my room for you. That's the biggest tip I have given.

I don't tip hotel staff UNLESS they go above and beyond the call of duty.

Extra towels
Extra pillows, coffee, toiletries, etc....

I just locked my toothbrush up in the room's safe.

If the room is clean, I always leave a decent tip for housekeeping, whether a hobby rental or a family vacation.  Thanks to the hobby, I now know how nasty the bedspread really is.  Clean sheets but wash the bedspread once a year if you're lucky!  
Seriously, before the desk person leaves, I flip the bedspead up an look under the bed.  I've found all sorts of stuff under there...  don't wait until bed time!

...upon entering a hotel room!  Anyone remember that show (long ago) on 20/20 where the reporter ran the black light across the bedspread?  I also used to supervise hotel maids (for a very short time), and I soon realized how the blanket and bedspread are not always changed often, only the sheets.  So, as soon as I enter the room, I pull the spread and blankets down, so only the sheets are exposed, even if I am just going to sit and watch TV.  I try not to touch that bedspread!  That 20/20 program has haunted me forever.  

During my short time supervising the hotel maids, we also found many interesting items.  Entire cut up watermelons in the bathtub.  Condoms and tighty whiteys under the lampshade, dirty diapers hidden under the edge of the bed, and many other "interesting" items.  

I love staying in hotels, so I try to block those days out of mind.  lol
