I have noticed lately the lack of people on the TER boards and I am curious what is going on. I remember when it was only a year ago, or even just a few months ago, that threads were very active. Now it seems as though a great many of the boards have cooled off.
With gas prices so high I have to walk an extra 50 minutes everyday. I started last Wednesday, walked 20 miles and lost 4lbs. I have read on another website that people are taking another job to pay for gas.
In places like Tennessee farmers are using mules. In Atlanta newspaper carriers are using horse and buggy.
Even if you haven't taken a second job to cover gas prices, with business being slow- there's less of the wife running around, less overnight business trips to take, for NYC- less reason to come into the City from the Island or Jersey.
It's coming upon summer, which means finals for schools, travel plans for the family, people going off on new adventures, etc... Plus we just had a holiday. I'm sure the boards will pick up in a bit.
With warmer weather finally here in the midwest, more time is spent outside instead of in front of the computer. Also, as others have said, with the economy so bad, and the prices of gas, food, and other necessities, I for one don't have the resources to hobby as often. So, I don't spend as much time on the boards.
Gas prices have a noticable effect on spending...but not enough to affect hobbying. Even at $7/gal., would not stop me...only job loss and a total income loss would be enough to stop.
I also have noticed the drop-off in posts, particularly on the NY board. There is still plenty of commentary here, though....
maybe the novelty has worn off a little? not hobbying so much, but talking about it. I also have noticed that board memebers have shorter fuses lately.
the morons who occasionally crawl out of the woodwork, make assanine comments, correct someone's spelling, then sit back and watch the fireworks until the next time they get bored.
Maybe if we don't feed them, they won't come back. That's easy to say, but some of them make it so easy.
I've noticed a lot of other discussion boards starting up that promise a kinder and gentler conversation. I see a lot of the frequent posters over there. I think that this may draw people away from this board, although I still find it one of the easiest to navigate. Honestly it feels like homework trying to take a look at all of the different things going on on all of the different boards. That is probably effecting the numbers a bit. I really don't think it has anything to do with the price of gas. Even if it goes up a dollar a gallon and it takes 10 gallons to get to your appointment, that is only an extra $10. Most hobbiest can swing the extra ten bucks.
But many of the long time contributors have quit posting because the caliber of posters has dropped -- ask inanae questions, ask 411s with no link, etc. That just feeds on itself to have more posters drop out.
