That he is surprised that you are articulate and very well spoken and he seems genuinely surprised about it?

I have and it makes me wonder if they deal with illiterate, horribly spoken people everyday or if its because they think providers are ignorant and only have a 3rd grade education... Or is it because of stereotypical beliefs people have about one another?

Always makes me wonder. Do I take it as a compliment?  No, because I feel as if they were expecting an ignorant highschool dropout with missing teeth or the stereotypical Shiquita from Central & Avon. Am I offended by it? No, just very aware of where people are coming from and how they were raised or came to think in that way.

Just something I observed.

Is that they seem to have a low opinion of providers or women in general. Every time a man acts surprised by my intelligence and wit I always ask him what kind of women is he usually with. Most providers I know are some of the smartest people out there.

To me it is condescending when they act like they didn't know women could be smart and or funny. Or that women with great intelligence would actually choose this life. Why not?

I love the men who come to see me and make comments like, "I chose to see you because your mind turns me on" oh saposexuals are so fucking sexy.

prejudice takes on many different forms and manifests itself in many different ways.  In the end, it still reflects small-mindedness and often reveals to us exactly who we are dealing with.  Maybe that is a good thing.  For this allows us to learn rather early in our interactions with them, who the truly ignorant people are and by observing this obvious cue, exclude them from our activities.

Fortunately for all hobbyists, there are considerate, understanding providers who look past other, less impactful idiosyncrasies, and help us reduce our stress levels before setting us loose on the rest of the world!

Does he actually say, "I'm surprised!" or is it more of a "Wow, you really know a lot about that topic." Sometimes, the statement is more of an acknowledgement that a statement of utter surprise.

"Nice! That outfit makes you look really thin!" Oh, so you think I look fat in my other outfits?

"New hairdo! It makes you look younger!" Oh, so you think I look old when I wear it the other way?

"PoTAYto!" Oh, so it used to be poTAHto?

Guys say dumb things, trying to be nice (and even honest nice) but end up putting our foot in it

... and I've complimented them on their written correspondence, but it's wrt to the general population, not providers as a group.  It seems to me it's increasingly rare to find people who know how to write well, so I like to compliment people who exhibit exceptional writing skills. Also I appreciate a keen intellect and sharp wit, and the ability to have intense but civil discourse on a wide range of subjects.

But from your post, I take it that the guy you're posting about wasn't being complimentary in that fashion, but expressed surprise that "someone like you" could be articulate and well-spoken.

I was very young and naive when I first got into this business and I'm sure in my early days that I inadvertently displayed a bit of surprise when a client was younger and  more handsome than I was expecting. It doesn't sound as condescending as lowered IQ expectations, but it was still based on assumptions.  I would almost get a little nervous about unmarried, young, conspicuously hot clients and wait for the other shoe to drop.:-)

If you use a word three syllables or more, some have some rather cringeworthy reactions of surprise and delight. On the one hand, you know they wouldn't be taken aback if someone in any other profession used a word like "approximately". On the other hand, those lowered standards only make them easier to hook. There is such a thing as the "soft bigotry of low expectations", but as long as nothing else is soft, the cash is flowing, and the tone is benevolent, I'm happy. Lol

but i guess i won't ever again because providers take compliments as insults!

geez, ladies, chill!  take a compliment!  christ, when a provider tells me i look handsome in my suit, i don't say,  oh sure, you say that to all your clients you're just filling time with insincere compliments to make them feel good.  even though it might be true it totally destroys the fantasy.

don't you think guys are giving you compliments because they like being with you?  that it's part of the ritual of men and women enjoying each other physically?

when guys say you are pretty or sexy, do you think they mean "compared to most hookers i see" ?

after calling you sexy and gorgeous, what do you want them to move on to?  "boy, you've got a great fashion sense!  your color palate choices in clothes is quite stylish!"  no, intelligence and personality are the obvious choice for more compliments.

and why do you think the unspoken implied second half of their compliment about your intelligence  is "as compared to most ho's," instead of "as compared to most people i meet in my daily life" ?

i will give you that there are a ton, literally A TON, of men out there who dislike women and partake in this venture simply to diss them.  that's a sickness i can't explain (but trust me, dislike of the opposite sex while f^king them is rampant on the female side, too).

really, unless you are seeing a bunch of misogynists in a row (in which case learn to screen better) i would respectfully suggest part of this might be projection on your part.

guys are giving you compliments.  take them, even if its only in the spirit of superficial fantasy dates.

i myself only see smart women.  i think to be successful in this business you have to be savvy and intelligent.  now i will grant you that each of you ladies might have experiences with a whole bunch of guys who are disrespectful to women.  in that case i'm sorry, but again, that might speak more to your research and screening procedures than the general attitude clients carry with them.

but i'd appreciate it if you wouldn't assume all men are negging you when they tell you how great it is to spend time with somebody that is smart.  i know i certainly am sincere when i tell my dates that.

BPJ, I think most of us like genuine compliments, and I don't think the complaint is about those at all. I rather assume that compliments I receive are given out of respect/passion/admiration/etc, but then again, if I had any whiff that a man thought that all women who play in this arena (or women in general) are mentally challenged and are the dregs of society, I certainly wouldn't see him. Still, we know those men exist; they are a vocal minority in my opinion, and I'm going to trust the OP to know the difference between a real compliment and one for "for someone like you."

I've also gathered that some men aren't very good at choosing a woman who will suit them well (they don't read reviews, etc), so they end up with girls who are more problematic. Even in the dating world, guys seem to be a bit clueless about the process, but that's because most men get distracted by certain body parts and forget the most important one, the brain.

Good grief! Not a lot of wiggle room on that one!

I'm not good at the rapid repartee, but how about, "If you'd like me to dumb it down for you or explain anything to you, just say so."

I know that asking, "What do you mean, 'Someone like me ...'???" could put a chill on things very quickly. I guess you have to let things slide ... until you can't anymore

All I can say is when I charged  250 - 300 I got that comment often but when I increased my rates to a upper tier no one said anything like that. I am forced to believe maybe it was rates or maybe it was the people I attracted. Really I still don't know why.

a provider pm'd me stating the same thing, that a guy can say a nice thing in a nasty way, and you won't know unless you actually hear the way he says it.  i will go on the record admitting that i wasn't there and didn't hear the inflection or see the body language.  a guy can give a back handed compliment and neg a girl, but when transcribed on paper the words seem innocuous.  my bad.

there are a lot of guys out there that don't respect women in general and are happy to put them down at any moment.  i am sure that there's lots of clients that don't hesitate in letting their disdain show at the drop of a hat.  sorry you women have to put up with that.  and i sure hope that once a guy shows his true colors, you never have to see that guy again.

it is my true wish that you only get clients that enjoy and value your company, and give you all true genuine compliments.  come see me, i sure will!

On the Simpsons, Homer is standing in line at a car show.  Every guy goes up to the girl modeling next to the car and says, "Hey, do you come with the car?"  She responds, "teehee" and the next guy comes up and says the same thing and she responds the same.  There is a long line of guys waiting in line.

I thought that was pretty amusing.  I'm sure they hear the same thing all the time.

One of my ATF's giggled at something I said when she was just starting out with an agency.   I told her she was beautiful (which she is), and she laughed.  I asked why and she said, 'Xxxxx, told us that men would say that".  I was amused and responded back,"Well you are beautiful, and what is the agenda of the woman employing you to imply that you aren't?"  It was a good conversation.  ;)

I cut far less slack to girls who charge 5-600 than 300.  If you're charging a premium, you're wearing lingerie that fits well and is higher quality fabric than Frederick's of Hollywood.  If you have tattoos, they are tasteful and well done versus random unfinished black lines or "memorial pictures" on your body.

Ford Mustang or Porsche.  You just expect a higher fit and finish or better performance.
