TEACHING MATH:

Teaching Math in 1950:

A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is 4/5 of

the price.

What is his profit?

-------------------------------------

Teaching Math in 1960:

A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is 4/5 of

the price, or $80.

What is his profit?
-----------------------------------------

Teaching (New) Math in 1970:

A logger exchanges a set "L" of lumber for a set "M" of money. The cardinality

of set "M" is 100. Each element is worth one dollar. Make 100 dots representing

the elements of the set "M." The set "C", the cost of production, contains 20

fewer points than set "M." Represent the set "C" as the subset of set M and

answer this question:

What is the cardinality of the set "P" of profits?
--------------------------------------------------------

Teaching Math in 1980:

A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is $80 and

his profit is $20.

Your assignment: Underline the number 20.
---------------------------------------------------

Teaching Math in 1990:

By cutting down beautiful forest trees, the logger makes $20. What do you think

of this way of making a living?

Topic for class participation after answering the question: How did the forest

birds and squirrels "feel" as the logger cut down the trees?

There are no wrong answers.

Teaching Math in 2000:

A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is $120.

How does Arthur Andersen determine that his profit margin is $60?

Teaching Math in 2010:

El hachero vende un camion carga por $100. La cuesta de production es.....

The logger cleared trees from land belonging to the Federal Government ... Bush and his buddies just gave him the trees.

Dick Cheney's buddies at Haliburton asked the logger if, since he was going out in the forest anyway, could he please carry along this 100,000 gallons of cyanide and just dump it somewhere out there.

The logger then exploited 4 illegal immigrants to saw the trees into lumber.  At lunch time, they barbequed the Spotted Owls that were still in the tress.   They sawed 400 trees ... it took 4 days ... he gave them $3 each.  They were happy.

The logger sold the lumber to a contractor who was putting up an office complex in Santa Monica for $100.   The contractor used this substandard lumber to fulfill a part of his Conditional User Permit issued by the liberals in Santa Monica (to build one office tower, he had to build 30 low income apartments on Ocean Ave).

The Low Income units cost $150,000 each to build.   Bush and his buddies at HUD ponied up $147,000 each, so the new owners got beachfront apartments for $3,000.

The first apartment was destroyed by fire.  The insurance company paid the owner $175,000 in damages.

The second apartment was destroyed by a flood.  Bush and his buddies at FEMA paid $300,000 in damages.

The owener of apartment one asked the owner of apartment two "Tell me, how do you start a flood?"

The other 28 apartments were occupied by low income liberals who rallied in support of increasing taxes on raw lumber.

So how much did the logger make?

Well, he made $88 on the wood, paid $35 for gas for the truck ($11 of that in taxes), his Workman's Comp Insurance payment was $6,000 so he was in the hole $5,947  and to add insult to injury, because he was a business owner, he didn't even qualify for unemployment.

It's a good thing that Haliburton paid him $500,000 to dump that Cyanide!

LMAO!!!
it also amazes me that the girls who failed mathematics and economics courses can very quickly and accurately count the $$ amount in the donation envelope.

in all seriousness, it is a damn shame that our children do not receive the same quality education we did, largely due to political motivations and rhetoric. I won't even go into my opinion of standardized tests to evaluate a students performance.

that's our loveable Pig alright!  :-)

this is what i love about TER ... two radically opposed parties united by a common perversion

i just wish Reps would let the "prevert" within to emerge more often ... if they're "liberal" about their sexuality, why not their government?  ;-)

not taking potshots at anyone really, just saying is all

The 1980 one is classic.  When they got to college, I had the "pleasure" of trying to teach them physics.
