When one thinks of risk factors for oral cancer one usually thinks of smoking and alcohol consumption...not DATY.  But the risk factors are changing.  Much still has yet to be determined, but it is now thought that the human papilloma virus (HPV) may be responsible for oral cancer of the back of the tongue, the throat, and tonsillar pillars.

This brings to bare the next possible risk of hobbying - throat cancer.  It would be possible to contract HPV thru DATY with a woman infected with same virus (or visa versa too).  But take heart, hobbying enthusiasts, it is possible that the same vaccine used to prevent HPV infection, and cervical cancer, in young women may also provide protection against oral cancer.  This, among many other things remains to be seen.

Not intending to alarm, just wanting to make sure everybody knows, licking that snatch may not be as innocuous as once thought...

Best,

DC

I smoke, and I drink too much, and I DATY regularly and frequently.

So I guess I'm gonna die someday. Oh well ...

you are correct in that the current thinking is that the HPV vaccine may be effective in men.  (you may wish to check out my post - complete with references)

Why not now? well... it is coming - but clinical trials, production (will it be the same vaccine or another strain - etc) all has to be worked out... but you are correct.... and that is good news for us all.

the more we can generate a "heard" immunity, the better off we will be.

Not sure why we need to know every risk of hobbying.  It's pretty obvious that we all know we could catch something nasty at any time from a variety of unsafe behaviors.  But most of us continue to practise them anyway because we love it, and we want it, and we are all very aware that some bad shit could happen to us.

Does anyone know who did the study, who funded it, what it's affiliates are, why it was undertaken and what are the religious backgrounds of the researcher?.  Studies come and go without proper vetting of the authors and instituions producing them.  Then somebody swims a piece of information out there and next thing you know all of us think we're going to get throat cancer from masticating some fish and finger pie (easy trivia question to identify the song that line is from).

Put this shit out of your mind and just relax and enjoy fucking!  I think I have more of a chance of getting throat cancer from our chlorinated water supply then from a lovely, warm, inviting pussy.

The link provides some basics on the diseases caused by HPV and hepatitis...

If you wish to bury your head in the sand... that is ok, but don't stop others from gathering a bit of information such that they can make informed decisions...  that is really irresponsible.

who do you suppose did the vaccine for women? do you have any idea how vaccines are developed?

Get real - the profitability on vaccines is not that great.... I guess you think that vaccines just fall from the sky.

Well, if you can find a way to connect the back of your throat to a woman's clit, then you might be at risk. Otherwise, the HPV virus, which is quite fragile, has to work its way from the front of the mouth all the way to the back of the mouth, through a bacteria filled environment that is deadly to most forms of bacteria and viruses, not to mention your saliva which is also anti-viral due to its slightly acidic nature.

In other words, the risk of HPV infection in your throat is extremely remote. However, the same cannot be said of women providing BBBJ, since there is the potential for direct contact with the back of the throat.

CDC is often overkill, almost to the point of crying out "the sky is falling, the sky is falling".

The most dangerous thing any of us do, is drive or ride in an automobile.

Yes, there is some risk involved in any sexual activity. I have calculated my risk, I still drive and DATY!

I am single though, I might be more conservative if I had a SO!

Meaningless conjecture at this point. I will add my meaningless conjecture that the odds of my getting throat cancer from daty are miniscule. Alot has been written over the years about oral sex and hiv. I have a better chance of my powerball retirement plan working than getting hiv via oral sex. So I will continue to indulge in one of my favorite activities and I will not be thinking about throat cancer while doing so.

Let's be frank, there is almost no sexual activity that is truly enjoyable that is 100% risk free.  The risks of DATY include transmission of HPV as described which --after a long period-- has been shown to increase the risks of cervical cancer, but has not been shown to increase the risk of throat cancer though that is theoretically possible; herpes infection; bacterial infection; and --theoretically-- HIV infection.  It makes no sense to get angry when this is revealed, though the actual risks should also be laid (no pun) out. [I did this for reviewers about two months ago.] Decisions should always be made on the basis of information.

Viruses grow in the back of the mouth all the time.  Just ask somebody who frequently removes them.

First, the range of saliva pH varies depending on what you last had in your mouth (cola, or beer, water or bubble gum etc.) Healthy normal saliva, 2 hours or so after ingesting anything should be just slightly ALKALINE - 7-7.2 or so.

Second - on DATY and viruses in the mouth getting to the throat not being a problem - the mouth represents a warm moist place to hang.... and that describes an excellent environment for the transmission of a viral disease.   The inner lining of the mouth is a mucosal membrane - and therefore similar to the lining of the throat - once the mucosal membrane is infected, the virus can replicate and simply move or spread through the epithelial cells within the oral cavity.  Again, the risk might be somewhat low, but it is probable.

Third, little is actually known concerning "the how" of HPV and laryngeal cancer (Laryngoscope. 2002 Apr;112(4):700-7).

And yea, JUST LIKE everyone and everything else, there is a risk.  IF you have a healthy immune system and, in general, are in good health you are less likely to be infected, however, the stats are there, and there is a risk...

but HPV is associated with an increased risk of throat cancer... it's not just theoretical.  that is the bad news, the good news is that throat cancers associated with the finding of HPV have a higher survival and disease free status after treatment....  (Int J Cancer. 2007 Jun 1;120(11):2386-92 - this is one of several papers on this subject).

Go figure.

most adults, is that you've already been exposed/infected.  However, my own thought is that it cannot hurt.  The plan for releasing the vaccine in males is the same as that used for females, that is an age limit, and below that age, you can get the vaccine, above - and the feeling is your already exposed...

This practice does not make me happy, although I do see the logic behind it....

...there's still alot that's not known about HPV carcinoma.  It is known what sites are at risk.  It is not known if there is a premalignant stage that can be screened for.  It is *presumed* that one of the primary routes of innoculation is vial oral sex - fellatio, cunnilingus - whatever.  True is is known these malignancies are more manageable and offer better long term outcomes.

Anybody who presumes that the mouth cannot be infected would be surprised how folks with warts on their fingers will end up with warts in their mouth.  It happens.

The point of this post is merely to make sure the hobbying community knows there is yet another risk.

Your post caused me to do a literature review.  I am embarrassed to admit that there was an excellent article in the New England J of Medicine, which I read regularly (I guess I missed the article.), and which shows a strong relationship between HPV and throat cancer and also between number of oral sex partners and throat cancer.  The incidence of throat cancer is low, but it does increase with unprotected oral sex witha female partner.  Too much fun to give up.  I may get myself vaccinated with Gardisil.
