I was approached last year by someone who claimed he'd hacked my computer's camera. He claimed he had footage he'd share on various media unless I paid him $5,000. I never responded, taped over my camera and temporarily withdrew from several sites which were the only ones where I could suffer any damage. Nothing happened.
But if I were you I'd contact the site in question and see if they would remove the info. You never know unless you try.

All public pictures are inherently plausibly deniable.  It's only pictures of you that are obviously private that may be of concern.  If there are pics on the website that are private I would post them on Facebook or wherever to make them seem like public fotos. No one will be able to unravel the time sequence. So who cares if to they have public pictures -- nullified.

There are no websites where escorts review clients. Do not click on links in a text or an email that you do not know. Do not send 3K dollars to anyone that is threating you. This is a scam, just like the silly deposit scams. Do not respond, do not send money, and move on with life. Once you interact they will continue to harass you. Legitimate providers that require your screening info are not going to risk their reputation with this silliness. This happened because you clicked on a garbage nonsense text, not because legitimate providers screen. Please don't conflate the two.

but if you really want to do something, forward the text to your local DA, and ask if they can do anything to learn who that number belongs to, and charge them with extortion.

Think about it. If they really had something on you, they would have sent a sample of something questionable you did. I wouldn’t respond. Let’s say you did send $3,000. What would stop them for requesting additional money?

If they provide a link or some wallet, you should know what to do. Extortion is a felony. I wouldn't feel bad at all in calling the cops or fbi on the scammers.

I think it was on 60 Minutes or Dateline or other Investigative Reporting show that once a scammer finds a "mark" (someone who replies to their scam - blackmail threat, investment opportunity, Nigerian 419 scam, "Important package, click here to confirm your FedEx delivery address," Premium Escort Service for only $99 , ...) that the contact info becomes more valuable and moves from the cheap list of "200 million valid email addresses" to the expensive list of "10,000 emails that succeeded."

I agree that it is probably a scam. Let LE (local, state, Fed, FBI, ...) take care of it.

Exactly.!  My wife gets the same scam blackmail emails all the time and her computer doesnt even have a camera.

That happened to me too last year. Those scammers deal in percentages of folk who were scared into responding. Best course of action is to simply ignore it. The one scammer who tried to scam offered me 12 month payment terms🤣🤣🤣

I agree with you this is a scam. But there are actually sites where providers share info about clients to keep each other safe and avoid people who don't pay etc.
