Well, many human behaviors have multiple causes.

Yes, it's the fun of the discussion.  But yes also, PH, some of us miserable wretches dwell in the most arid, barren, and  life-shorn valleys od SelfEsteemLand, and indeed need very scrap of validation possible to sustain our terminal sense od self=worth.

Some people make posts under their boards names, so they can be "known" and get a popularity status.

Some people try to make up questions and stories to post - sometimes stupid stuff - so they can promote their asses and have an opportunity to include a picture and attach their website links.

Some people post using their names because they are intelligent and articulated and like to stir the board with interesting posts.

And, some people prefer to post in an anonymous way, even if knowing the topics discussed will go over the 500 hits mark, because they are not using the posts to get more business (they have plenty).

I fit in the last category, I can be anon as I am a well known provider who doesn't need the "extra" boost or make up stupid stuff just to get her name on the first page of the boards all the time.

And, being low key regarding board participations, my BackDoorGirl alias can speak her mind and discuss her personal issues without having them back fire against her real working profile.

Doe it make sense to you?

Besides, I enjoy the attention I get from the guys dying to find out who is behind BackDoorGirl's ass

I think you have to have a relatively thick skin to have any fun on boards like this. People are not always as polite as they would be in face-to-face conversation when posting on a chat board. Some subtleties of humor and wit don't always come across in the written word either.

Just stick with your handle and people will figure out where you are coming from. Everyone will not always agree with what you say but at least they will know, to some degree, who they are talking to. Of course, ultimately even our handle is an alias but real names and faces are not the only way by which a person develops an identity.

Sure, there is ego involved, if there wasn't these boards would not exist. The discourse is fun but our ego's are what cause us to wade in here in the first place. That is not a bad thing BTW, everyone has an ego.

TER is a great source for information-both the written reviews and the boards. But I also look at the boards as a form of entertainment in and of themselves.

i luv aliases, many of which, given the age and the educational attainments of many TER hobbyists, are [quite unsurprisingly] clever and amusing as hell

my only reservation with alias use is when someone uses it to hide behind and to  deliver cruel personal attacks on someone else.  and I have found myself on the wrong end of that transaction

as others point out, it's great for voicing an unpopular opinion

and as someone on the politics board points out, it can be defensive -- a provider researching a TER handle won't be able to link it to one's posts, but more importantly [in his view], won't be able to associate the real person with the handle and the attacks being made on him on some of the boards

I wouldn't worry too much about anyone construing your post as taking a position. Since you're using an alias, no one cares about your opinion anyway, remember? Now if you were using your handle then your post would have meaning, it would matter and more importantly, Swimtrekr would respect you.  

I made a post a few days about that was a bit inflammatory about alias use, for which I was accused of ad hominem- and rightfully so.  My hope was that another discussion regarding aliases would surface, it did very quickly thankfully.

My issue with aliases, on a logical level is one of accountability.  Granted, TER is an anonymous system for security reasons but within those parameters it works because we are able to attach our beliefs, experience and personalities to a handle and thus create a reputation and identity visible to others in this complex and secretive society.  Overall, it works very well and that includes the use of aliases.  The pitfall is it provides a means for drama hounds, mischief makers and assholes to clutter the boards with useless garbage.  While I do not think alias use should be banned, I do think it needs to be used VERY sparingly.  There are instances where it is useful- voicing an unpopular opinion or asking a delicate question.  However, those are few and far between in my eyes.  I have also seen posters say, via aliases, they use them to be humorous.  OK, I get that you want to be cleaver and some ARE funny but if you want to use your charisma and wit to impress others why not via a permanent username?

All too often I see an alias handle posting generic BS that clutters the board and pushes useful information out of sight and therefore, out of mind.  I log on to see what others are doing in the hobby, how I can provide better service and have a community with individuals who experience this unique lifestyle alongside me- NOT to read silly agendas and vindictive bashing.

I don't use aliases.  If I want to say something, I say it.  If you don't like it, ok.  If you do, ok too.  And I have had both responses to my posts.

My thought is the alias-users want to stir up stuff, but don't have intestinal fortitude to do it as themselves, so they use an alias.  Really don't understand that.  You afraid of someone bashing you?  Hey, it's your opinion, so what difference does it make if someone doesn't like it?  Not everyone is gonna agree with everything you say, so why hide behind an alias?

I am asking these questions because I am looking for answers.  I just don't understand the need to hide behind an alias.  I have aliases, but have never used them.  I figure, if you like my post, you will say so, if you don't, you will say so too.   And I will take responsibility for both type of statements, as me, not an alias.

Ladies, I can make an exception for you, because you have more to lose when making a statement that  some of us guys might not like.  But you guys?  Enlighten me, please....

The way I see it the term alias AS USED on this board is any name other than the one on your TER birth certificate.
For the purpose of this board The name on your TER birth certificate is your "real name" and any other name you use is an alias
As for me, I suppose,technically,  you could say I  have numerous aliases, however since the Followme family is so large I allow my cousins and other family menbers to sign on using my TER log in name then go to their names such as
SantaFollowmeClaus
FatherFollowme
EasterFollowmeBunny
PopeFollowmeLXIX
DrFollowmeOBGYN
RabbiFollowme
Followmeopolis
to name just a few of my family (there are many others )
So technically these are aliases , however in my case they are all real  members of the followme family.
To the best of my knowledge they do behave themselves.

The drama queens seem to be the guys who insist that everyone do as they do. Not everybody here thinks "board identity" is all that important. Anonymity is more important to me. If some handle user doesn't respect that, I really don't care.

2008=27 is my way of predicting that in this year 2008 the YANKEES will win their 27th world series.

The only variation of it was last year I was 2007=27..........and as we all know that did not work out as I wished, but I'm confident this year
