why do so many guys pretend to be newbies?  if i had a dollar i would be rich for everytime i heard "i have never done this before" or "i don't do this very often"  and then you screen him and it turns out he has written 100 reviews and is on several boards.

They're all ego justifications. Whether one is on the "supply" side or the "demand" side of the hobby there is a pervasive stigma attached.  

Many otherwise active hobbyists are also looking for a convenient excuse for NOT writing a review
