Reading of the passing of Bozo got me fondly recalling the childrens' TV shows I watched as a child. Captain Kangaroo and Hobo Kelly were my favorites. I remember I watched Sheriff John too, because I have that song "Put Another Candle on My Birthday Cake" playing over and over again in my head!

I grew up in NYC & L.A. from the late 50's-mid 60's--------Sheriff John & Hobo Kelly were too sanitized for my tastes-----preferred Engineer Bill & Tom Hatten----- In NYC, used to love watching Chuck Mcann, Officer Joe Bolton & Sandy Becker-------any boomers out there remember these guys or other kiddie hosts ?

sure do.  what about Sonny Foxx, who was essentially  Sandy Becker's competition?  Roy Heatherton as "The Merry Mailman" [and he's the dad of Joey Heatherton].  Romper Room?  Each city in which it was shown had it's own Romper Rooom host.  Soupy Sales?, several programs on local NYC TV in the early and mid-1960s?

Those were the dayz.   Not a care in the world.

I guess my favorite live show was Wonderama, the Bob McAllister years. But I spent most of my time watching the oddball cartoons - bugs bunny, road runner, and looney tunes were fine but when my dad finally broke down and got cable, I fell in love with Astro Boy, Speed Racer, and Gigantor. I loved Felix the Cat, and Krazy Kat and Ignatz the Mouse, and the cartoons that Captain Kangaroo used to show - Tom Terrific with Manfred the Wonder Dog, and Lariat Sam and his horse Tippitoes.

Of course, my taste changed rapidly over the next few years and my new favorites became Elizabeth Montgomery, Tina Louise, and Barbara Eden.

Yeah, I loved the old Bugs Bunny cartoons of the 60's, in addition to Rocky & Bullwinkle. My favorite comedian was Red Skelton.

Same here... I started to associate different cartoon characters with types of people.

Like Car Salesmen with Fog Horn Leghorn.

And I can't help saying, everytime I see someone do something stupid...

I eventually migrated to the mature clowns. By the time I reached 16 I finally figured out how funny the Marx brothers really were.

And while I liked the far out comedy of Ernie Kovacs, I'm cetain my first wet dream was with Edie Adams. I still can't see a Muriel cigar without thinking of her.

And I dearly miss Steve Allen and his "Man on the Street" Gang. Don Knotts, Bill Dana, Louis Nye and Tom Poston.

Chuck McCahann, Ray Heatherton(the "Merry Mailman", who was also father to the babe-licious Joey Heatherton), Zacherly (he was into 'dark' childrens entertainment), Soupy Sales(my sisters and I must have blown a hundred gallons of milk through our noses laughing from that show), Sherry Lewis & Lamb Chop, Supercar, Fireball XL-5.

 Interesting how the above have all been replaced by syrupy sweet purple dinosaurs, hermaphrodite tubbies, or mutant homicidal maniacs with machine guns and chain saws.

My favorite cartoon...Let's not forget the Wacky Racers...Dick Dastardly and the Mean Machine, his sidekick, Muttley. the lovely Penelope Pitstop, Peter Perfect, Pat Pending, the Arkansas Borthers, the hopping plane (Wright Brothers?)...the haunted car, the mobsters, the buzz cut duo...

...the magazine rack and deep in the magazine rack were a couple of copies of Playboy and so this little seven year old decided Captan Kangaroo was a bit... tedious.

Grandpa would mumble something funny but you couldn't understand him. His wife called him "pa" all the time -- too frickin' hilarious!How about The Road Runner? I actually wanted him to be caught and makeout with the wolf, but I guess they would be gay. Oh, who cares. How about Daffy Duck? I loved his lisp. And, who could forget Tweety Bird and Sylvester? I was more into Looney Tunes but there were a few others that rocked my boat (so to speak).
