Maybe buy a few here some "clues"?

Can you send me your address so I can send you some more points?

I know you rich daddy types all have platinum amex's  and I am wondering what is the best way to spend your points? Or and other tips to reap the benefits of this card. Obviously the sky lounge and the airline credit is a good way to recoup the money it cost to have the card. What advantages do you take by owning this card?

What should I do with my 160,000 points?

...interesting threAD. I like to take advantage of the concierge to make dinner reservations.

As far as what you should do with your points? I'll shamelessly suggest you use them to travel somewhere you haven't been before... Like maybe St. Louis?

Devin,

Suggestions on hotels and airfare would be the best bet I would think, being you can pay for your tours.. if you tour

I have flown my wife and I first class to Maui before.

The trip would have cost almost $6,000.00 in cash, but was only 315,000 miles.

That is 315,000 points, which spent on merchandise or cashed out would be $2,700.00 at best

I think you get more "bang" for the buck that way.  I flew round trip to Costa Rica this winter first class for 90,000 miles.
PS: I don't see the value in anything above a basic Amex green card.  I've done a lot of foreign travel and never got the benefit, so I downgraded.  All really rich daddy types have Amex Black.

I always use mine for airline tickets since I usually fly for pleasure rather than business.  I sometimes don't see the need for the Platinum card.  I have a fried who routinely flies 25,000 miles per year (poor guy spends his life on a plane) and won't carry anything but a basic green card.

Transfer them to miles, and then use the miles to upgrade a full-fare international coach ticket to business class.  About 50,000 miles normally allows you to convert a $2,500 (or so) full-fare coach ticket to a $8,000 (or so) business class ticket to Asia -- a savings of around $5,500 -- around 11 cents a point.  I have done this to Japan, Hong Kong, or Beijing many times.  OR, you could use this same 50,000 miles for a $400 ticket to Florida -- less than 1 penny a point.  To me this is a no-brainer!

For those who don't travel international, a business class international class seat is MUCH nicer than a domestic first class seat -- these seats go nearly flat and become a very comfortable bed.  There is really NO comparison to a domestic first class seat!  Unless United or American upgrades me, I never pay for a domestic first class seat, but I always fly business class on international flights -- and normally this is how I use my miles and accumulated points.  I don't fly as much today as I did in years past, but I have flown well over 1 million miles in the last 25+ years.  The first time I flew to China I did coach, and NEVER again!  As far as Amex platinum goes, I had one 20 years ago, then evolved to the fact that the old Delta gold Amex was more useful for less money, this later became a United gold Amex, but as I fly less now, today I like the perks and prices of Amex clear, Chase Freedom, and black Visa (stainless steel, actually, I think).

I agree about the green card, but 25,000 miles a year really isn't that much at all.  In fact it's 5 round trips from NY to LA.  I used to do a lot more than that a year and didn't consider myself a heavy traveler.

In Vegas, before flying home...cool.  The points can be used to lower airfares or hotels...take your pick.  Personally, I prefer the first class upgrades, but that's me...

Those 160K points should allow to fly for free for a couple vacations this year.  I only have 55K left...may have to buy more, LOL!

I have used an Amex Platinum for years...for personal and business use.  I am a points whore - I just love accumulating points.  I have racked up a ridiculous number of those little bastards.  Every time I think of redeeming them for something, I always end up thinking it's not worth it...As in I had to spend $30,000 to get this measly 300 dollar airline ticket???  So I just pay cash...and earn 300 more points for my stash.

One day I imagine I will just end up donating all of my points to charity.  Maybe the Make a Wish Foundation could use a few million airline miles....

But if you really want to use your miles, I would vote for airfare upgrades.  Pay for coach and use miles to upgrade to first.
