For those of you who have hit this milestone, I encourage you to get your PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen) levels tested.  I learned of this test at my latest physical, and while the test is controversial, I decided to have it with the idea that more information is better than less, despite the fact that all of my DREs (Digital Rectal Exam, looking for nodules on the prostate) came back negative.   My PSA level came back very high, which led to a biopsy which in turn led to my diagnosis of an aggressive form of prostate cancer.

Many forms of prostate cancer require no treatment at all, and can be simply monitored for changes.  Unfortunately mine is in the minority that do need to be acted on.  But assuming I have caught it early enough for a cure that PSA test probably saved my life.

Here's to each and everyone of us living long cancer-free lives.  But if you have the dangerous form of this cancer the earlier to you get it addressed the better your prognosis.

Great advice.

I am in your same situation except the cancer is not aggressive and considered slow growing; the treatment is called "active surveillance" which includes semi annual PSA tests, and at least one annual biopsy.  The Doc calls it treatable and not a death sentence.

For what it is worth, I have had PSA  tests since age 40 and sure enough, the level began to increase up to 5.6 (4.0 or below is  considered okay) in a two year period in my late 50s.

The literature says one in three men have this type of cancer at age 55. If you are at the ages mentioned, get the test!

For the PSA regarding the PSA test.  It is so easy to put this type of thing off until it is to late.  Best of luck to you and thank you for sharing your story with us!

Now those are really a pain in the ass, lol!  But you can virtually assure yourself you'll never get colon cancer.
OTOH, a PSA test is a simple blood draw.

My urologist does both PSA and PCA3 test when I go in.  I just had both done within the last few weeks and the PSA showed normal for my history but the PCA3 test showed positive and as a result of the test I have a biopsy scheduled in a few days.   He was concerned enough to recommend the biopsy but as he said, the tests show the possibilties but the biopsy will tell for sure.

I have several friends who have had prostate cancer.  Some have survived and some were not so lucky.  One friend in particular had his prostate removed and can no longer perform regular, normal sex.  Even popping 100mg Viagra and using a pump gets minimal results at best.  I believe he claims that in the right conditions he can get the sensation of an orgasm but nothing comes out.  He's also used injections but I don't pry into his private life to know how it well works for him.  I know he used to hobby but since it has become such a project he no longer does.

You guys may want to talk to your doctors and see what they recommend for you.

I am glad to hear your cancer was found early. However, administering the PSA test in otherwise healthy males with no other signs, is contoversial at best. There is no consensus on whether the benefit outweighs the risk. Half the health industry says do it. The other half say don't. My doctor is in the "don't" group. There is a lot of information to read and the best advice is to educate yourself about it.

I had prostate surgery just a little over a year ago and I can say that it is not particularly pleasant but there's little to worry about.  Of course, we all worry about that one thing and, sure enough, my equipment really was not performing up to snuff after surgery.  Mind you, I'm 63 and needed the blue pill before surgery.  But afterward, even 6 months, there was still no good activity down below.  There are new injectable drugs that work well.  Now I can be as hard as a teenager (As Richard Pryor said, "My dick was harder than Chinese arithmitic.") and, if I want to, I can remain that way for hours.  The so-called 4 hour erection does show up and can do permanent damange to Mr. Happy but sudafed takes care of that just fine.

So hang in there, this may not be great but there's definitely life in the hobby after this.
