find ourselves on a deserted beach - had to climb down a narrow trail to get to the beach... but it was worth is.... alone... by the ocean...and my lovely bride.... ahhhh....... totally nice.
On the west side of the island, where you can do this! The main settlement is about three miles to the east...and most of the rather limited tourist activity is confined there at the only resort located on the island, plus on the boats that call there. If you want to do what OFF posted, this a place where you can...
oy! I hate it when that happens, when I was posing for pics on this big rock in Oahu, right on the waters edge, and all goes well , and I hear a whoosh, and ker splash!! I was completed soaked! I was stunned for a couple of seconds and then the hilarity of it hit me, and I burst out laughing!
They don't call it the 'Big Island' for nothing! Lots of places to 'enjoy the sunshine'. That Hawaiian sun feels great ALL over. Did you ever get to the Green Sand Beach?
Take some measures to ensure your privacy, and try to go where there aren't a lot of people. I've had some wonderful fun boating with a lady friend, when we anchored in a little cove. We rowed over to the shore, and had a little picnic followed by some very nice nookie al fresco.
We had to cruise a fair bit away from the marina -- you can't just go around the point and start boinking. You have to pick your spot carefully, and be aware of your surroundings. Otherwise, you can have Department of Natural Resources cops intruding, or drunken frat guys harassing you, or irate landowners giving you grief. Still, most good-sized lakes have some nooks and crannies where you can be reasonably sure of being alone.
I've also had fun while hiking in the woods, although that was more of an impromptu "Nobody's around, let's slip off the trail" thing.
There a still a number of beaches that are unofficially clothing optional, or private areas to engage in outdoor recreation. Plus the feeling in general is much more laid-back than the US mainland.
If you get the opportunity, go. Kauai (the garden island) is where I was.
