the Mods were treated...  and I do admin a couple of non-hobby boards (the largest with some 1400 members)...  and try to keep it one big happy family.   I do not know how or why these changes were initiated...  but we do "own" this site.  Perhaps there are even legal issues which are better engaged from off shore.  We do not know.
We also do not know what future changes are in store...  because surely this will need tweaking
So I am taking a wait & see attitude.
However this works out, I wish all the Mods the very best, and all members here
Happy Hobbying,

I thought we left that to the gals who are clueless about how "incredibly stupid" that looks.

You have been a contributing member here for some time now....some loved you...some hated you...others didn't really give a crap about you (and the same can be said for nearly every poster here).

But with the "changes" that TER is making...really doesn't affect you in the least.  And those it may indeed affect are in the minority they indeed may have a reason to no longer participate here.  If so, they will simply "fade away".

But I doubt that you will leave this little corner of the world.  And DON'T announce "I'm back boys" or the equally infamous "You guys missed me...so here I am again".  It just doesn't suit you!  Leave that crap to the gals that just DON'T get it.

These changes affect us big time. MP has friends here, real ones, and he is just letting us know why we will not be seeing him. I know you, ChgoCPA, haven't formed real friendships here as you keep who you are under wraps, but others have. Please respect that.

hopefully can handle themselves in an adult manner.

If not, they too can "retire".

Years ago I had gotten "fired" from a volunteer postion, one that I had been performing for nearly 10 years.  And the new "powers to be" simply saw things differently than the way I did (sounds familiar...right?).  They ultimately failed in their endeavor, and I moved on quickly finding alternatives to my prior volunteer work.

As others have commented, volunteers provide "some" value, BUT when there is money at stake it is infinitely better to have "some skin in the game".

My comments were really on the "retirement announcement" and just how unbecoming they are.  And now I've seen a few of them here.  It is the ultimate in juvenile behavior...and accomplishes
absolutely NOTHING...IMHO!

I have quite a few friendships here...real ones that extend beyond this virtual world.  HOWEVER, I prefer to have those friendships "behind the scenes" and if you could see my PM library and email library you would indeed see a different persona than the ChgoCPA you didn't know (other than from my posts here).

And to suggest that the mods were poorly treated is simply YOUR observation.  As I posted prior, many people who volunteer do so because they truly enjoy what they give back.  But when money becomes part of the equation, the directions that the "money fellas" take may indeed differ from what those that volunteer have to offer.  There is generally NO easy way to tell someone that has "offered up their time" they are fired.  Frankly it is an oxymoron to fire someone from a volunteer postion.  But I have had that experience, and so have many others.

And if indeed you want to "protest" the firing by leaving TER...so be it.  You will indeed miss out on the "fun and games"...but that is your choice.  If the former mods wish to depart, same applies there as well.  But....I do believe that all of the "members who are threatening to leave" will indeed stick around, perhaps in a lurking mode, and then return in all their glory to continue playing in the sandbox.

Don't assume that people always stick around.   Things do change.  I have taken very long breaks from TER before when I dated someone on a more serious level.  Never even checked my account once during that period of break.

By the way, how many people have you hired and fired?  Being a CPA I doubt you have too much experience in that area, at least not as frequently as those who run a company. Don't misunderstand me, I'm not insulting you, just speaking the truth on this matter. There are MUCH nicer ways to fire someone, especially if you have been keeping a good relationship with them for a long time.

They did more then fire them they treated them like they are a problem. It is not just my observation but the observation of the mods I have talked to and emailed. If I was TER I would have thanked the mods for there work by giving them some free VIP and letting them know what is up first not by shutting them down, then letting them know, then moderating them, then finally hours later taking their handles down. My way of doing it said "Thank you but we want to try something else. Here is a reward for your efforts." and not the "You are the problem, so we are shutting you down. Now, get lost." message TER sent them.

To honestly not realize that I have been involved with many many companies on rather intimate levels is just ignorant.  But since you have a very myopic view of the CPA/consulting world, I am not terribly surprised at your comments.

And NO...there is NO nice way to fire anybody.  The result is always the same...YOU'RE FIRED!!!  And people do not take well to rejection...EVER!  I have had to fire more folks than you can care to imagine...and it's NEVER fun...EVER.

So to see the crying and whining here is absolutely NO surprise to me...whatsoever.  It hurts to be rejected...for whatever the reason.  But guess what...all those volunteer folks will live to fight another day.  Or go and find another gig to moderate.  And TER will move along as they wish.

And you, my friend need to do a little research on just what types of services the accounting profession actually provides.  And here's a hint...it's more than preparing a tax return.

As one of cpa's cyber-friends I agree.  And there was moderation of free speech here.  It just depended on how severe your speech was and if it was perceived by the mods to be aggressive enough.  As far as I could tell, those that were most friendly with LP and GaGambler could get away with the most.  That being said, I liked them and will miss them, but a change in moderating style won't necessarily be bad.

So the mods work at least 90 hours a month and VIP costs $30 a month. That means they worked for $0.33 an hour. Yes, that counts for a lot. People line up around the block for $0.33 an hour that is spent for you. Especially since they need what they where paid with to even do their job. I guess having the tools to do your job that is worth something. I guess. I know I would never work for so little and think I was paid help.

Plus, I didn't think not being able to review the ladies you seen was a perk. I thought that it was a cost of doing the job. I must have missed that memo. I don't think TER could have stopped them from seeing the girls if they tried.

Are you really that clueless to think that the $30 a month the mods saved mattered that much to them if they could afford to play in this game? The mods did what they did because they liked TER and wanted to be of service to the community. Free VIP had nothing to do with it. There are easier ways to get the $30 needed for VIP.

Wrong again, Inicky.

The TER General board mods were inconsistent when it came to enforcing rules (TERs and theirs). It was obvious that they were playing favorites when it came to whom they applied the rules (TERs and theirs" to. To say their efforts weren't really given a chance is disingenuous considering how long they were both TER mods.

Considering that most of your posts are belligerent and sarcastic in nature, I'm not surprised you have a negative perception of everything.  Maybe your way of handling things reflects more about your personality type than anything else. Your reality is not the same for everyone else.

And that doesn't make either of us right or wrong...simply we see things differently.  And that is what makes these boards and banters worth reading and posting to.

I honestly wish there was a NICE way to fire someone.  But when I have had to "terminate" long time friends in VERY high level and high paying jobs knowing full well the dramatic effect it would have on them and their families...nope..not fun.  But if you can/have done so with a smile, good for you.  Watching someone's REAL lives turn to shit in an instant is a VERY negative experience.  And unfortunately I have had to do this more than once.

And primarily because of my "attitude" that is indeed why Companies and their owners have relied on folks like me to be the "Turk".

Hopefully you will always see the sun shine and never see the other side.  It would indeed be a better place for all of us if "reality didn't get in the way".

Perhaps I wasn't clear - by "they" I meant Gambler and to a lesser extent Phil. I think Swim and FunTimes from the Chicago board did an excellent job. I'm sure others did as well. Unfortunately Phil and Gambler were posted on the biggest board and I would venture to say drew the most attention.

It's a shame the good mods were on the receiving end of the shit that went down but that was a TER decision. If I were them I would have tried canning Phil/Gambler and getting the main board on the right track before making such drastic moves, but they didn't ask me.

No, they didn't "clamp down." They SAID they were going to clamp down but the same things they said had to stop continued on unabated. They were ineffective. I suspect because their egos wouldn't let them follow the rules.

In short, yes, scoed is as clueless as usual.
