Hello all:
Was doing some supplement research when I discovered Maca root powder. Have any of you men or women tried maca root? I initially was interested in the energy and endurance fir my cycling and weight training. But now I discover that maca has sexual vigor and emotional wellness attributes. I’ve been taking maca for three weeks now and can see that I’m a little more horny, have more cum volume and my penis seems a little thicker. Maca also has nice attributes for women sexually. There are studies that were 12 weeks long. Can’t wait to see what the 12th week holds. Any comments, criticisms or observations?

Said it seemed to help them in matters sexual.  Of course it is always difficult to tell what is helping and what is natural.

I did buy some but haven't really been consistent at taking it.

She swore by it, told me all about it but I never tried it.

I’ve been using it for years. Here is what I’ve found.

 * It can take a few days to start having a noticeable effect. Though some claim it happens the next day.
 * Black maca powder is better than yellow or red for men as I understand it. I tried both black and yellow and got the best results with black maca
 * If you’re not drinking enough water its benefits will be noticeably less
 * It definitely increases semen volume and erection quality. I used to get occasional dry pops. Not after starting with black maca.
 * You need to give your body a break of either a couple of days a week or one week a month or you build up a tolerance for it.
 * It has been shown to improve endurance slightly but measurably in endurance athletes. I have found this to be true.
 * Some find that their sexual recovery time improves. Seems to vary from person to person. It helps me a bit. But not in a major way.
 * When you first start using it your dose is probably about a teaspoon. After some time, you will need to take a tablespoon or two. But never much above that. If you are thinking you need to take more, take a look at that expiration date or take a break from it for a week or so.
 * Make sure you pay attention to expiration date and keep it in a cool, dry place. I find its potency begins to decrease even before the expiration date. I’ve never tried refrigerating it.

If you’re taking maca, don’t neglect other things which help with sexual performance such as zinc.

Have fun

Thanks! I’m still learning about maca. I never knew about the black maca. I’m using the browned colored maca. Also didn’t know about the expiration aspect nor increasing the amount. I’m taking one teaspoon per day, half in the morning and half in the late afternoon.

Nutriceuticals are unregulated. Unless you pay a lab to analyze what you bought, you have no idea what is really in the bottle. Some of these companies spike their stuff with illegal generic viagra or cialis or other prescription drug (nothing natural).
.
Maca root contains potential mutagens so be careful how much you take.  Most of you probably want your schlong to grow, not corrode and fall off.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lepidium_meyenii#Safety
"The presence of (1R,3S)-1-methyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-β-carboline-3-carboxylic acid (MTCA) in the extracts of maca indicate a potential safety issue as a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (re. which see β-carboline) and possibility as a mutagen. Due to these potential mutagenic properties of MTCA, the Agency for Sanitary Security in France warned consumers about the possible health risks of powdered maca root, a declaration disputed on the assumption that MTCA would be deactivated by boiling to process maca roots. MTCA-like compounds are associated with craving behaviour."
.
If the companies can save money by NOT boiling (drying, pressing, re-powdering ...) the root or powder then you can expect to get the full dose of mutagens. If you  boil your own stuff, you might be decomposing anything effective in the batch.
.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lepidium_meyenii#Uses_and_preparation
"Maca has been marketed for its supposed traditional medicinal effects, although evidence is insufficient that it has any effect on human health or disease. A 2016 systematic review found limited evidence from a small number of studies to improve semen quality in healthy and infertile men. A 2011 review found no good evidence for the effectiveness of maca as a treatment for menopausal symptoms in women, with no evidence of its safety."  (Does that last sentence disagree with what you read about women's health?)
.
Be careful. Save your money. See your Doctor if you have real issues that need medical attention.

That article is from 2007 and it's behind a paywall. There are no results or conclusions in the abstract so who knows what they found out. The wikipedia entry cites more recent articles, including a WebMD article that concludes with, "Maca may be a natural product, but talk to your doctor before taking any supplements. There are always potential side effects, including those from processing. [and spiking with illegal additives]"

Find a medical site that doesn't say talk to your doctor about using any supplement. If that link didn't work for you just put the search in Google Scholar and you can find a bunch of additional hits that will point to sources that are at least from research or academic sources and not just whatever a general google search finds.

Also, chicken little, you can order it from a bunch of USA based sources that sell it as a food source, which is what it is, so much meet the FDA requirements for human consumption. It's been used for centuries by people living in, Peru I believe, and has some documented basis for increasing stamina, particularly at higher altitudes. I am not advocating -- nor am I interested in using it -- but rather than talking from no knowledge and fear just go get reliable information. It is just not that hard to find.

Agreed, Jensen.

I wouldn’t even try it, in spite of all the endorsements from the weeds and seeds crowd, until I read the NIH study with male cyclists.

Still, everybody has to decide for themselves what they are willing to put into their body. That includes some pretty wild things for the crowd on this site. Some of them way more extreme than a tablespoon of maca powder. But, hey, we’re all adults here.
