Republicans are making the law as offensive as possible.  They have their 5-4 on the court, they are pressing this issue.

Not surprising. This will go the the Supreme Court and now they are expecting a Roe overturn thanks to Alito.

How sad, when it should be about a person's choice to choose. NOT what a bunch of crusty ole' men, who would do the choosing for me.

You shouldn't have said the "R" word on here, though, because it will encourage people to say "You should have posted this on the politics board!"

Anyway, please...everybody expected stuff like this.  It was just a question when and how it would start.  Who wouldn't expect it with a Born Again leader and two new Supreme Court appointments?

I'd say the culture war has officially begun.  Besides the war on terror, the war on drugs and the war on sex.

Why is anyone surprised?  Folk kept voting for ultra conservative candidates, and the GOP sold its soul to the religious right.  Go figure.

. . . overturned by the Supreme Court.  Politicians value their constituents.  And lots of constituents have had abortions or have had someone close to them have an abortion.  The Supreme Court IS influenced by politics by the way, in case there was a doubt.

They are wanting to take this to the SC to test the waters of the newly appointed Supreme Court Justices.. it was my understanding that they are extremely conservative.  It will be interesting to see how this pans out.

Scarier than hell to think we are sinking further and further back into the dark ages...

Probably won't even make it to the SC.

The saddest element is that more than a handful of states will follow. And like before abortion rights, more than a few women will have to have their unwanted pregnancies in backrooms and other places that drive it underground in those states. Sure, a women could cross a border, but that will be probably get legislated and considered illegal for the purposes of abortion.

Nothing wrong with individual states rights, rather than federal imposition, being the norm. That`s the way it ought to be.

Move to San Francisco (which ought to be a state unto itself) I hear you can`t even kill people who actually deserve it there.

The anti-abortion gang went about out-lawing abortions not at the Federal level but at the State levels (not enough votes in the Supreme Court). You can count on your hand the number of states that allow this procedure.  If you want the procedures in some states they are not allow. Ladies sometimes has to travel to different states to have this procedure. Think about the distance some ladies has to go to have the procedure perform. South Dakota is another win for them.. The nail in the coffin will be the Supreme Court. Another reason people need to exercise their vote.

Unfortunately, those politicians currently in power got there by pandering to their anti-abortion constituents.  Those constituents have figured out that even though all 3 federal branches are under 'their' control, abortion is still legal.

The right is going to have to 'pay the piper' soon, and take down Roe.  Otherwise, they face a schism in their party.

If they appeal enough times, they'll reach the Supreme Court.

Why do you think the current people in Congress wouldn't jump on this bandwagon and ban abortion nation-wide?  It's the same group of folks beholden to the anti-abortion crusade as in the state legislatures.  And they've shown very little regard for states rights in the last 6 years.

People are still going to do it anyway.  This scares me - how many unsafe practices will be going on?  People do get desperate.  Do they not see that?  Do they not care?

As far as I am concerned there simply is no concern for the welfare of the woman and this now will cause  an average civilian woman, or an upstanding doctor to become a criminal should they choose to perform and abortion as it is now deemed a "crime" in that state.  Just like the Hobby people will find ways to demean those who participate in it, and justify making them criminals and treating them so.

It's called the death penalty.  I'm constantly amazed that the same group that screams so loudly against abortion will so quickly condemn that unloved child to death when they become a troubled adult.  Apparently life only has value if you're a good person.

I could forsee a few possible scenarios that could really destabilize this country.  Women will have road trips to get abortions, perhaps women depopulating some states.  This will cause resentments among the states, and factions will come in and try to get the State laws reconsidered.  You think the Red/Blue split was extreme in the last election, just wait until you see what happens next.  

Not only that, the choice to reproduce or not is basic.  If our constitution doesn't mention that, it is a significant mistake.  This has got to be treated on the constitutional level.

I hope it goes there eventually; I just wish we could get there without having to go through all of this.

$45. They'll need help to carry the fight. Let's see if the anti-abortion groups waste their money fighting this one, especially since the likeliest outcome is to further entrench Roe v Wade as the law of the land. I expect they'll pick away at the fringes like partial birth abortion and parental notification for minors.

I doubt that the Supreme Court will back radical abortion overhauls while he is sitting on the bench. Even if the two new justices vote will Scalia and Thomas on dramatic overhauls of abortion freedom, they are likely to loose 5-4.
It is worth noting that the oldest justice on the court and the leader of the liberal wing was placed on the court as an avowed conservative and voted that way for a while before moderating and finally becoming liberal.

. . . tend to turn more liberal instead of the other eau around. I guess they get older and wiser.
