I know someone said good things about this movie a month or so ago on here, but I just saw it a couple of days ago, and I am still moved by the experience.
As heinous as the WTC bombing was, and as innocent as I would assume almost all of the victims and their families were of that political attack (who I have the utmost sympathy for), the oppression and brutalization of women throughout history has been an even more unjust crime.
Any man who thinks he can truly understand what a woman goes through in life ought to watch "The Magdalene Sisters". It may be an extreme case, but the views that were perverted by the extremeness of the Irish Catholic Church were not that extreme at all, and exist in many forms today even in modern culture. It is hard for me to begrudge women any sort of what many consider "preferential treatment" when I think of how women truly have been (and in many ways, still are), to quote John Lennon, "the nigger of the world".
The end scene with the girl in the institution is probably one of the most moving scenes I have ever viewed in a movie. It will break your heart.
... to the well-chosen words of Brother Spacey... "Magdalene" is a powerful and disturbing film -- especially when you realize that the Church was doing these awful things to these women as late as 1996 or so. My favorite moment: when the young woman says to her brother who has come to free her, "Where have you been the last four fucking years?" and he replies, "I was growing up."
You are right about being a minority. Women have endured many setbacks and catastrophic events throughout the centuries: brutal beatings for infidelity (whereas men were not chastised for cheating), shunned by town folk for becoming pregnant out of wedlock or from rape, unable to vote, murdered in some cultures in the middle east for being raped (often by relatives or close friends), minimal salary for hard work, bearing children, the list goes on. Men, on the other hand, have had to deal with the battle between appearing to be too strong or too weak (which must be horribly unpleasant and demeaning). It is so good to hear a man's viewpoint on a very delicate topic.
You should be praised for being so aware of the female pursuasion.
except last time you "spoke in tongues" i came with full force ... to a conclusion, that you are way too smart for me ... so kindly dumb it down a notch!
plus that's no way for my future ex-wife to talk to her future ex-husband, now is it?
Amina Lawal of Nigeria, convicted of Adultry(giving birth to a child out of wedlock). Sentence--death by stoning. Convicted in March 2002. The date 2002 is not a typo. She recently lost another appeal and is awaiting a date to die. I guess the reason I posted this is to show that the atrocities are still happening TODAY.[EOM]
